Pitbull x puppies? What is the law regarding them?

Have recently heard that someone I know has bred their staff to a pitbull dog. I know pitbulls are a banned breed, but I can't find any information online about where this leaves the puppies future.
All I can seem to find is that they judge on the physical appearance/measurements of the dogs? It seems to be a bit of a grey area?
It's not a situation I want any involvement in, but am (obviously) concerned about the puppies future now and it's been playing on my mind today :(

Why can't people just be responsible?!

Breeding from a Pitbull is illegal.

Deep sigh, you are right to be concerned. A responsible owner will have to register the puppies, have them neutered and muzzled in public. What's the betting these pups will be advertised as staffords? Pitbull "type" is a minefield but again, as it is a little subjective, any sensible person who thought their dogs fell into these broad brush descriptions should follow the route quoted above or run the very real risk of having the dog impounded and normally destroyed.

As Luci says, it is illegal to breed from a pitbull. All pitbulls are supposed to be neutered so who ever owns the pitbull is breaking the law.
I don't think the poor pups have much of a future.:(

:( that's what I thought, as soon as I heard my heart just dropped. They would have had a hard enough time finding homes if they were pure staffs :(
Hate to think of the future (or lack of a future) these puppies are going to have!

There was an item on the news earlier about this. A couple in Staffordshire have been breeding pitbull crosses and have sold over 100. They have to be neutured, chipped and insured.
It was on the Radio so just caught it above cooking tea so I think that's what they said.

A woman at work reported someone to the RSPCA for the state of their dogs, they were pitbull crosses and they weren't destroyed but rehomed. I must admit I thought anything with a hint of Pitbull breeding was automatically put down.

Urgh, that makes me so angry. We have a Staff X Lab but I think most of that 'Staff' is Pit to be honest. Got him from a rescue after owners breeding for money and not being able to sell most of them! He's lovely but a complete nutcase, two of the pups had to be returned to the centre after being too much of a handful.
When will these 'breeders' realise that they really aren't doing the dog world any good?

Depends where they are I suppose and how the legislation is interpreted.
ANY dog which fits to certain measurements and displays certain traits can be classed as 'type'. Lab x Staff included :(
Here such a dog would (if it came to the attention of the authorities) be impounded, assessed and if found to be of type, PTS.

Is it actually a pitbull or some sort of Staff X. Not that it really matters, as said dog just has to be "of type"- stupidly. I can only hope they were bred as pets and not for more sinister activities.

i think thats how it is across the country, they just have to be of type but maybe the puppies this post was put up about are staff cross (lets hope so).

as long as they are in good hands and behave them selves they should be ok-most of hem seem to slip through the net as long as they are well behaved.

My friend bought an unregistered 'staff' puppy, and was only told the dad was a pit when she queried how the legs were growing. Lovely dog, as it happens. Bit too fond of sticks, and prone to raiding the firewood box, but otherwise a model citizen.

It really just goes to show what a mess the Dangerous Dog Act is. When you consider that in 1991 it became law that all pitbulls and pitbull types were supposed to be neutered the breed should actually have died out by now.

People have either kept them below the radar, 'recreated' them using other breeds or imported them from countries where they are not illegal.

If they were KC recognised and there was a registry and a DNA database as in some other breeds, they would be slightly easier to keep track of. You can't at the moment prove whether a dog is a pit bull or not as they are not a 'breed', just a type.

I have a real issue with dogs going under the radar as Staffie x's because that is really not helping the breed at all. I even had people complaining to me when on the rescue stands that their staff was too small, no...it's pretty much true to breed. Even Stafford welfare are trying to differentiate between staffords and crosses to try to improve the perception of the breed and won't take on crosses any more.

I don't have anything against a real cross, my youngest bitch would fall into that category and she is a lovely dog but for those of us trying to retrieve the breeds reputation, people trying to slip all types as "pure" staffords just damage this breed even further.

I too have heard correctly sized staffies being referred to as far too small.:( The staff x label seems to be attached to anything vaguely of type and as you say is really damaging the reputation of the true staffie, such a shame.
