hi everyone i have a young gelding 18 months old. I have regularly wormed him through the year but after his latest wormer he passed a massive amount of round worms. He then seemed to loose weight very quickly.. i started to feed him two feeds a day of topspec fibreplus and alfa beet .smallish amounts.Today i found under his massive coat a thick long swelling under his belly towards the chest which is pitting ..i have googled this and some of the results are alarming others not bad.. has anyone any experience with this. .

Hi I would get a vet to check ASAP as can be caused by number of things , suspected this is my tb who lost weight incase he was loosing protein but was false alarm but got vets to double check anyway , hope he is ok please keep updated on how u get on x

I agree with racebuddy, pitting oedema can be caused by a lack of protein. The protein keeps water in the circulation, and when there isn't enough of it, there isn't enough "pull" in the blood to keep the water in the vessels, so it leaks out and accumulates under gravity, hence the oedema along your gelding's chest/belly.

However, this is definitely something I'd speak to a vet about, and there ARE other causes, so try to keep an open mind until you've spoken to a vet. Hope all is well!

Had the vet today he has done bloods and early results show protein-losing entropathy :( not a well pony. More test results tomorrow .He has had a steroid injection and the vet also did a worm egg count which is still high! I wormed him 2 weeks ago and has been done on a regular basis.
The vet does at the moment think its due to the worms.. he had massive amounts of the large roundworm.. there does seem hope though as Percy is eating well.I have been out today and bought a high protien balancer to add to his feed.he is a lovely boy I hope he pulls through. Thanks for your replies .Once I knew what it was there is quite a lot of info about it ..xx

My mare had protein loss, bloods showed this. It turned out to be liver disease. Protein leaks through the muscle wall and collects in the lining of the skin. Ask your vet about it

Other signs of liver disease are here on my website for H&H members
