Hi, hoping for some positive stories. My 6 year old maiden mare has been scanned and diagnosed with Placentitis. She is 291 days and i noticed three days ago she not happy to be touched in tummy area and slight bagging up. Vet is local farm vet and thinks nature should take its course. Rang a breeding specialist who said antibiotics and regumate. I don't want to give up on this wee foal so have started medication. Anyone had any experience please......

I’m sorry I can’t help, but you might be better off posting this in the breeding section. Lots of very knowledgeable people in there who may well be able to give advice.

I hope it all works out xx

Please listen to the specialist, antibs and regumate are crucial if you want a live foal. You must also be present for the birth or send her now to an experienced stud so she can be watched 24/7 as there's an increased risk of placentitis

Thank you TheMule, i will indeed listen to the specialist. We have a camera up to keep an eye and soon as her bag fills more or we have any fluid we are sending her to an equine vet.

Yes two, one foal didn't live long sadly, he was pretty much a dummy foal from birth. The other is now 5 and currently in my bad books as he keeps knocking over his specially warmed fast fibre drinking water.

Both were untreated, one was suspected but no treatment advised and that one is the one who is now 5. However I think that was very good luck.

Listen to specialist but be warned that you are not supposed to travel mares who are due to foal within weeks so it would be an idea to get a date in mind and send her to the vets in plenty of time. Good luck hope it goes well xxx

Sorry, I meant to say an increased risk of red bag delivery

If you're not already a member, I suggest joining The Foaling Hub on Facebook. I've seen multiple examples of mares with placentitis on there, many with happy outcomes.

Healthy filly born last night, 329 days no red bag and everything like clock work. Placenta unhealthy but placentitis caught got earlier enough and treated to save foal. So over the moon.x
