I'm looking for somewhere different to go to ride when I'm off work and Epping Forest isn't too far from me. Does anyone know what it's like - are the routes well marked out? I can see you need a licence but looks like you can just buy that on the day.

Other than Epping Forest and Hatfield Forest, does anyone have any other suggestions please? I remember there used to be a really nice ride around Bishops Stortford way (I think the Bluebell ride?) but I'm not sure if that was just a sponsored ride.

I'm in Hitchin, so preferably no further than 1 1/2 hrs each way (which I think rules out going to the beach).

You don't have to go that far afield. The Ardeley/Moor Green/Benington area in North Hertfordshire has loads of off road riding. (This is the area to the East of Stevenage) If you want somewhere safe to park up contact me on E-mail peter18510@btinternet.com

Thank you! I used to live in Benington (although never kept horse there) so can't believe I didn't even think of going there as that's much closer.

Exactly as you can hack across the valley to Nasty and Great Munden and then back along the Roman Road and back via Ardeley plus loads of other nice long routes. If you want someone to hack out with let me know.

This sounds interesting I am in St Albans is it far from me always looking for lovely places to ride, op I often box to Epping as I used to keep my horses there so know the routes, its £5 for a weeks pass the routes are easy enough to follow if you stick to the surfaced rides, if you ever need someone to ride with I would be happy to meet up with you.

The Ashridge National Trust estate near Berkhamsted/Hemel Hempsted has a huge amount of off road riding, some on public bridleways and some permitted routes which I think you need a permit for. Parking for boxes is excellent off of the drive upto the monument. Maybe check it out on the NT website?

Thank you both, that's really kind. I have no sense of direction whatsoever! :-)

Thank you, I hadn't thought of looking on the NT site. I'm lucky to have off-road hacking where I am, but it would still be nice to go out to some new places.
