This is the best I could do, bar hogging him!!

Would this be acceptable in the hunting field??

I do these plaits on my arab, and believe me, practice makes perfect! I know its dull, but do one every night - I can do one withing 10 mins now, don't have a photo I can show with a close up I don't think although will see what I can fine, but I think it looks alright now! Hairspray also helps....
How long is his mane? Needs to be pretty long really to get this type of plait to stay in, J's is about 6 - 8 inches.
But I think this type of plait is fine in most instances!

Sure that will be fine.

As you know im out hunting Sat in Essex and me and my friend arent plaiting, they both have neat and tidy manes and we will be nicely turned out. But not plaiting - dont really have time!! Have them all to muck out and 2 to ride b4 we go!

Ok, best photos I can find are this one:

To show how long his mane is (the bay obviously!) (he didn't realise he was having his photo taken - he usually poses!)
And these ones - they are a bit far away but you can see that it looks fine ( I think) plaited like this for most disciplines! Pease excuse the dressage one - that was a while ago, first test on grass of the year, and I have managed to start looking a bit less tense now hopefully!

Ah, in the time it took me to find those you replied! His mane will be more than long enough, so as I said before, just do it every day and you'll be so quick after a while. I plait once I get to show - everyone who has been up since 5 plaiting is always very jealous!
You might just need to thin it slightly in the middle if he doesn't mind having it pulled, that will make the final plait neater and help it stay in!

its the effort that counts IMO, but i agree if you practice regularly they do get straighter - one thing i will say is have you ridden with him plaited like that?? just check it will with stand fast work and jumping and not come out half way through your day as that would be annoying after you'd made the effort. i did my ponies like that once and it started coming out as soon as she flexed her neck but that was perhaps as her mabne wasnt long enough and was very clean/silky so had no grip

Thanks!! I will have another go tonight, and then in the morning.
I rode him with it last night, and after some headshaking, tanking around, and generally being a pain in the butt, just because of a bit of wind, it managed to stay in. Will go and buy some industrial strength gel today and I won't wash it!!

Yes it pays to be seen to have made the effort, and a clean tidy horse is definitely looked upon with more approval, even if it's not the standard plait....loads of practice will make perfect and he'll look fab on the day

Someone I know hunted her very long maned horse with one of those lattice plaits (what's that called?). It certainly got some looks and comments (along the lines of 'gosh that must've taken hours'), but I'm not sure whether they were necessarily approving.....think she'd have been better with the plait you've done

Awww, thanks, yeah he does come alive under saddle! Although he was caught unawares in the first one, usually likes to pose!
One other thing another post reminded me of - if you are going to do these plaits often, BAN mane and tail detangler!! Plait will never stay in if you use that stuff....

Have a great day out.
