Have no experience with showing cobs so am looking for some friendly advice :).
My friend has a lovely coloured cob mare that she would like my daughter to compete for her this year. Very honest and pretty 15 hand with a good little jump to her too.
So...was thinking ridden, in hand and working cob...but (hold your breath)...owner doesn't want to hog her...

I suppose the question to cut to the chase is, 'Are cobs EVER shown plaited?'..at a local, unaffiliated level?

Yes BUT you couldnt show them relly in COB category. Would have to be hunter if plaited and pulled. I have a wee cob and if I hogged her I could do cob classes with her but as shes not she goes into hunter pony classes. She is part bred welsh so can go in their classes but next to the little PBWxPBA/PBTB's she looks like a chunk :o

Hmmm, yes, that's my thought...next to a lot of the others she really will look chunky!!!
She really is an honest sort though and will jump clean and bold up to about 2'6, 2'9...what are the height restrictions like tho.....? (shuffles away to look at some old schedules for workers classes...)

There are also coloured classes that the horse could do with a full brushed out mane if they have enough feather to be a traditional gypsy style cob.

Unfortunately she has had previous problems with mites so has her legs clipped now...in fact she is all tarted and tidied like a show horse...except for the mane! That's what is making it difficult to find a class to suit her.

Think in the end we are going to have to go for a workers class (to make use of that honest little pop) and maybe do a coloured class and see how she fairs.

Have you got any pictures? Quite often what people call cobs at home aren't cobs in the showing sense, you might find she plaits up very nicely into a hunter type. :-)

At unaff I wouldn't worry. Just plait her neatly and unobtrusively as possible and enjoy her.

Good advice Thistle. I have experience at County level with racehorse and coloured classes but this is a whole new 'arena' and it's amazing how I seem to be turning myself in circles ;). As it is for my daughter and she is pleased as punch that someone thinks she is good enough to be a jockey on their neddy, then I should just relax to it a bit...trouble is, I like to do things properly :)...poor daughter ;)

My old YO had a plaited cob (competed predominantly in dressage) and did the odd local show class with him and plaited him for that. She usually did dressage on the same day though so I don't know what she would have done if she had only been showing. At local level it doesn't matter too much, I think plaited would be better than a short unplaited pulled mane?
