Plaiting query

A friend of mine recently told me that the plaits in your horse's mane shouldn't be visible from the left, but I've also seen people plaiting so that their plaits "stick up" and have put white tape around them.

Does it matter which way you plait? Why use the different styles?

People plait along the top of the neck to make thick necks look thinner and plait 'on the side' to make a thin neck look thicker. Personally I prefer the latter, they look smarter.
