Plaiting Question...

What do all of you do who own horses with very thin/barely anything forelocks? I want to plait one of my boys up for a show but he has never grown a forelock and the amout of hair he has got is too little to be able to plait!

Could you take some of the hair from when you pull his mane and plait that into a little plait, and just sew it on to what little hair there is?

It might be worth a try - I did it once where my boy had rubbed a bald patch because of his neck rug & it worked a treat!

unless it is a showing show, can you just put one of those fly veils on? Just hide the evidence!

First thing is preferably don't cut a bridlepath in your horses mane that way you can use that hair in the forelock plait. Then you need some extra hair if possible from a thicker part of your horses mane but you could try to find a willing donor and use this hair to create a false plait.
I have to admit that my mum is the expert when it comes to plaiting so I leave it to her

Also Megatek is very good for encouraging the hair to grow.

I use a piece of mane extension to make it thicker and plait it in. seems to work

megatek has had very good reports although I've not used it, worth a try IMO

Instead of cutting a bridlepath, pull that section of mane forwards to become forelock.

if you know someone who is pulling a tail of the same colour nab a handful and plait it. You can always sew that in and reuse it later on. There might be people thinking about getting hunt horses tidied up after their summer break who could help you out

The trouble is, his forelock is a different colour to his mane! He is part appaloosa and his forelock are really fine hair, and the rest of his mane is grey and slightly thicker. He has never had a bridle path anyway because there isn't enough hair to make one!

I might have to take glosgirl's advice and just cover it up with a fly veil!

Just bundle it up and sew the bundle together, whipping the thread around the 'bunch' to make it look thicker. Use some hair gel for any whispy bits left.

ditto the fake hair/hair from mane...plait a bit, plait/pull together the forelock as best as possible and sew the fake plait in. otherwise for sj just leave it or cover with fly veil

You have my sympathy! My Appy has next to no forelock and the mane she does have looks like it should belong to a foal. I'd go with the 'hide the evidence' trick as long as you're not showing
