Ok this may be a dumb assed question but I dont mind asking them as I'm a dumb ass some times.

I plaitied my horses mane at the weekend for a show. Now one off my friends is telling me I have plaited it down the wrong side.

I plaited the mane down the left side of his neck ,if you were sitting on him, right hand side if you are standing face on to him.

Bearing in mind that is the side his mane grows down I thought it just natural to plait it down that side.

Opinions?

You should be plaiting on the off side as per pic of the Donkey below. You can retrain the mane by plaiting onto the 'right' side and leaving in for a few days every so often

Correct is as above but you do see people who plait on the wrong side as they cna't get the mane to grow the other way - fine for eventing/dressage probs not for showing!

For showing you definatley have to plait to the "off side" (the opposite to the way you did), even if your horse's mane grows to the other side naturally - I have a horse who's mane lies to the left whatever you do to it, but I still plait it to the right.

For dressage, eventing etc they're more lenient, but it's still correct to plait to the off side.

As long as you aren't showing then I would say that you should carry on plaiting on the left...

Just think how uncomfortable it is when you put your own hair up in a way that goes aginst it's normal direction, and often that's not pulled as tight as it is when we plait our horses.

I imagine it must be uncomfortable for them to have their manes plaited as it is, without doing it the opposite way to how it grows naturally!

I wouldnt know how uncomftable that is as I have a number 1 razor cut. No plaiting on my head.

Some days I think I should go for a Number One as well, would save so much time and effort!!

Would make me sticky out ears look even more sticky out though!

Good luck with acheiving your goals!
