plaiting? (sorry if this is thick!)

hey, always wondered this, sorry if its a really thick question; but generally do people plait horses for show jumping? because a friend of mine told me that apparently plaiting them affects their jumping slightly..?

I only compete at about 2ft-2ft 3 at local shows but I don't plait, unless Toto is entered in showing as well. I just leave his mane, so I can grab it if I need to!
