plaiting thread?

I use knitting wool with a nylon content. It's way cheaper, easier to unplait, comes in a range of colours to suit any horse and is so much easier to thread thru a needle without having to put your reading glasses on!
 
Haha I had not seen that interpretation! Just in case anyone was hoping for plaits here's my mare plaited the other week
 
Go to your local saddler and ask for some saddlery thread, and quilting needles. The thread is amazing, it grips well, I don't knot my threads at all and plaits stay in for days if need be. Quilting needles are longer and thicker so don't break.

Linen leather sewing thread is the same as linen plaiting thread! I'm a bridle maker and if I want a small amount of a colour I don't have in stock, I use plaiting thread. TBH I normally use braided nylon thread to sew leather which is so expensive I certainly wouldn't be giving it away to people to sew in plaits.

I do buy it! :) Maybe what we get in NZ is not the same quality as you have, I find the cards of thread break easily. The thread I buy from my saddler is thicker. I buy it on the big cone.
 
Waxed thread, it doesn't fray so is easy to rethread the needle and it's stronger so tighter plaits are easier. I use it with a really large needle, the eye is big enough that I can rethread it with the needle still in the plait if it accidentally comes out, I can't cope with the tiny needles that come with the cards of thread.
 
Just a tip for threading needle with waxed thread - flatten an inch at the end of your piece of thread (I put it on a hard surface and run my thumb nail over it); it goes through the eye much more easily.

You can also push your needle back through the thread behind the eye to stop it you loosing the needle when your working.
