Just on the old thinking track....

Neddy hates mane being pulled. Or touched. You can only comb it with a plastic curry comb, as soon as you go near him with a "proper" comb he starts backing up and acting a prat. he does this when you try and pull it, and he needs twitching to go anywhere near his mane.

Want to try and get him out to some shows, and therefore presuming he really needs plaiting. "Mane" part of the problem is that it is so thick, even if you could plait it, there would still be bits sticking out everywhere.

I was wondering if it would be worth going through it with one of those dog rake/tail rake thingys to try and thin it a bit... or would it look stupid.

If anyone has anybefore and after shots, would be interesting!
 
Have you tried a solo comb? Thats what I use and it looks fine

Definitely invest in a rake.
Rake it from underneath rather than from the top though otherwise you'll end up with spikey bits.
