I have done some extensive checking.

The intial email relating to Guildford NEVER HAPPENED and is a complete myth, Surrey Police are looking into making some kind of press release to confirm this as the rumours have got competely out of control

Hi Mother Hen

Problem is, whether true or not, I find that the Police and Horsewatch and all other relevant sites dont tend to communicate that well...if at all.

Sounds very much like last year but if I found a plait in one of mine it would be coming out and horses moved, it is a well known method as you know, as well as the usual fence marking etc.

I think its better that people worry than not...and at least look out for plaits?

There is a full page item in our local paper tonight all about this. The Guildford to Holyhead story is mentioned as well, and a local police officer is quoted as saying horses have been found locally with plaits but none stolen. Keeping an open mind but having seen a picture of one of the "plaits" (on HHO I think) I would say they do look more like mane tangles.

I agree security is important, but so much time is wasted on these stories and so much hysteria is generated it can get in the way of sensible precautions - freezemarking, tack marking, etc

hi, this is not a myth, my friends yard was contacted re stabling the said horse over night, but the owner was on the way so they werent needed.

I received the email about the stolen horse in Guildford from a friend of mine who knows the person that this happened to. Also in the same week a plait was found in the mane of a gelding on our yard - he was living out 24/7 at the time in a field next to a public right of way, he and the other horses were removed right away to a more secure pasture. And a lorry was also stolen a week later, and we are in Guildford, Surrey, so all a bit worrying! Thankfully the lorry has been recovered by the police and after repairs are made will be returned!

One of our yearlings has 2 'plaits' very similar to those posted in a photo thread; 2 ends of the mane twined together. The yearling was in a paddock not 50m from the YM's house. If these ARE plaits then those thieves get about because this is Argentina and we're miles out of anyone's way. Will let you know if she gets stolen. Personally, I think they're tangles.
