Went to Hartpury yesterday and was very impressed by the standards of turnout. Particularly some of the horses had plaits that looked like little rose buds. They seemed quite wide so quite a lot of mane but just went into this neat little bud. Does any one know what I mean or how to achieve this look? The Eilberg's horses were particularly good but short of hunting down their groom I dont know how to find out??

i know the plaits you mean, and i think they look lovely but i can never do it :P

maybe they only work in horses with thin manes?? as then you can have nice amount of hair in the plait (so they can be small balls) but wide at the top...

hmmm... xxx

Sorry being dumb but how do you plait underneath. The horse Ferdi Eilbergs son was riding in the intermediare looked amazing. I want to practice.( not the Intermediare, the plaiting) LOL

Yes much more like these, how do I do it?? They were bigger and higher but i suppose on huge warmblood you are dealing with loads of mane.

I do a maximum of 11 plaits - and that is on OH's 17.1h TB, the grey probably has 7, maaaaaaaybe 9, and the bay has 5 or 7.

I stand on a box and plait, then fold the plait under once and sew in place, then fold again, pulling really tight - NEVER wrap the thread around the plait, always go through the plait.

To make them higher, you just need to make the top slightly looser, and keep the length tight, and plait upwards rather than down/outwards.

All of the pictures are horses with slightly wild manes naturally.

Take your three strands and just go under instead of over.. its great on tails if you can master it...

I have changed my plaiting so many times to keep various people happy, there are so many ways of getting them looking neat, I know just stick with the method that I can do quickest, also I find the mane has to suit your style of plaiting, ie I like it quite thin but longish.

We called that a "fish braid" or "herringbone braid" as opposed to "French braid". Thanks for reminding me about that one; I'll do it next time I plait his tail.
