Plaits??

What on earth do you do about plaits when your horse has rubbed a big bald bit in the middle of its mane

If its totally bald just plait up to bald patch then continue after. If you have some mane left make some false plaits. If you search my posts I did one on how to make and attach them

Years of feeling my horse could not live without a neck on his rug made me resourceful! However, this year he has had a rug without a neck, surprisingly did not die

and has a full mane!

Thanks i just wish she would rub a bit higher up for a change its really really thick at the top and she hates it being pulled

Could you take some hair from the tail to make fake plaits??

No - different type of hair and doesn't work properly - you need a donor horse with a friendly owner

Actually just remembered there is a company that does them think the website is extra forelock, mrs forelock?? Pipa Porley is the lady so someone else might know.

Never tried them (found out about them after I grew my mane back!) but probably worth a look at their website - they dye to match as well I think

My mum is a godsend when it comes to plaiting. I have an appy X mare with a ridiculously sparse mane and she is forever rubbing the bottom out. Mum collects the hair that she has pulled from the thicker top section of her mane and makes them into plaits that she attaches to the tufts of hair left over.

There are at least 3 'fake' plaits in both of those photos.

Wow! Those plaits are amazing!

My 3yo girly has quite a nice mane down her neck - but her forelock is jsut completely non existent!! When I took her to the futurity last summer I just didn't bother with her forelock, as the hair is so short it wouldn't reach to plait!!

I'm thinking about leaving some bits of hair from her neck grow long, so I can pull them forward to make a forelock!! LOL!! Like a horse version of a come over!!

I met someone who makes false plaits for her horse out of fine wool & it's easy to colour match with wool. She sewed them on to the scratty bit of mane that was there & they looked brilliant. I think you need to practice before a show!

I take it your girl has no bridlepath? I let the top of her mane grow as long as possible and do a "comb over" so to speak to create more forelock hair, and then add a bit of false hair. I collect what i pull from the thicker sections of mane through the year.
