Woud you need planning permission to erect some form of lighting in a field??
Our field is accross the lane from our stables (it is a single track road to the village but village is a dead end, so not a "through road"), so power would have to come over road from stables but there is a wooden telegraph pole next to field. Would we be able to fix a flood light onto it to enable us to ride on dark nights??

If you want to fix anything to a telegraph pole you will have to have permission from the owners of the pole.

not sure about the PP

Relative who opened a livery yard had far more trouble getting planning permission for lighting than any other aspect of the yard put together.
Good luck

Phone the planning department at your local authority, they will tell you whether you have any chance of getting planning permission.

You cannot fix anything to a telegraph pole. Local Authorities do fit street lighting to poles, but that is usually by using statutory powers or by agreement.

If its a flood light you need planning, but if its a 'security light' and attached to a building than you don't.

Our arena is lit by a 'security light' which just happens to point that way, because we couldn't get planning for floodlights (although the airbase just down the road has massive ones).

I've been thinking of getting some "site-lights". Builders etc. use them as portable lights. They're on a big tripod and the ones I saw came to about 6' high. I think you can get them from the Screwfix Website.

Not ideal, I know, but all you'd need to do was make sure they were in reach of an electrical extension lead to plug into and there you go - a completely "non-permanent" lighting solution.

I like that idea Faro! Might look into that one.
I don't think anyone would notice if we did put a light on the telegraph pole (we ordered a skip which was to be placed on the road, so needed a licence for it from the council. Skip hire company rang council and were promptly told they had never heard of our village!), altho itwould be the only light in the village, so might be noticed by the nosy neighbours!
Will keep thinking of ways to ride in the dark....

Yes you will need permission

We had no issues getting permission from our local council but you do need to be extremely specific about light flow and density and overflow to other property/roads etc.

You cannot attach to the telepgraph pole without permission of the pole holder (although our hous has 2 floodlights on an Electric Board pole that previous owners put up and no one has ever complained so we haven't moved them)

We used to use the builders tripods and tbh they really are too low and you get loads of overlap with them - me and OH crashed more than once when the other person was in the glare

- the other prob we had was forgetting to turn off our house PIR lights, cat ran through PIR sensor and we were both plunged into darkness whilst cantering round arena (our own stupid mistake

I know a big yard who have a schools right on the side of the road and they got around planning by attaching lights on the top rail of the post n rail fencing.

Not spotlights on top of poles positioned high but did the job just aswell.
