Planning to breed my mare next year..... Advice pls.

I have a maiden mare I plan to cover by AI next season, she's currently liveried on a large livery yard but will go away to be covered. Question is, is there anything aside from keeping her fit, healthy and the correct weight, can I do in preparation for next year NOW?

In particular her flu/tet is due shortly, so would an EHV-1 vaccination be worthwhile a the same time? Once in foal she'll have them at 5, 7 And 9 months and a flu/tet booster at 9 months gestation.

I was planning to have her CEM tested in early Jan 2013 so I'll have time to treat any problems, but are there anything else I need to be aware of and test for before sending her to be AI'd?

Ehv only if your going down natural route. Or staying at the stud it might be a requirement?Otherwise it's a waste of money.

Sounds fine for your flu and tet jab, get your tests done early 2013 then you have them for the season- unlikely to find any problems hopefully! Also worth getting a good repo vet to do a scan of her to get how healthy she is internally.

Thanks for the tip about EHV. She's being AI'd. Depending on the stallion I finally settle on, she'll either be going to the stud to be prep'd and inseminated or will be boarded by the stud's vet on his own premises and he'll take care of her for me and arrange the scans, checks and inseminate.

Good idea about getting a prelim scan to check her repro organs and make sure there's not going to be any unexpected surprises.

At the moment I'm considering McJonnas, Legrande and Magician GF. Magician is tipping it slightly as he's close to me and I like him, although doesn't have a lot of stock on the floor yet. For a first covering, I might use him although I am far from decided for sure

When I sent my mare to stud this year all they asked for was EVA/strangles tests before she could go - she stayed down there until the heartbeat scan and was also AI'd so no contact with the stallion and was turned out with mares for the duration.

I went with Legrande and his owners have been so helpful, particularly as my mare didn't take first time. That said, I have a jumping mare and was looking for a dilute stallion that could jump well. Magician is lovely too however and I have heard very good things both about him and his owner, so I think either would be a good choice, depending on what you want to do with the baby. McJonnas is not in the UK now and IMHO don't think is in the same league as the other 2. Good luck with your decision and the pregnancy. Do let us know who you decide on.

I think you mean EVA which can be caught either by the respiratory route or in affected semen.
I wouldnt vaccinate for EHV until the mare is actually in foal and then at 5,7 and 9 month and she wont need a test for this.
I would vaccinate when she is in foal though one big stud lost 10 foals in a week this year when they got EHV and it is transmissable the same as most of these things fairly easily.
All mares coming to us have to be tested for CEM,EVA,EIA and strangles and this is common for a majority of big AI centres these days but not for some of the more old fashioned studs just to give you an idea.
Also people say mares dont need swabbing if they are maidens but actually a young maiden mare is more likely to have a venereal disease than an old breeding mare as alot of the bacterias like psudomonas live in the ground so definately worth testing.
