Plants in Water trough

Out on a walk I passed a lovely clear water trough for horses which had some plants growing in it, I guess oxygenating plants.
The water in my trough goes green very quickly. Does anyone have plants in their trough, and what sort. I guess they would have to grow without any soil.

Yeah you could use pond marginals/bog plants. Bulrush and elodea species are good in ponds but I'm not sure if they'd be ok if nibbled by a curious horse.
Green water isn't actually harmful though, it's just suspended algae.
