I am unable to walk far or very quickly ATM and OH is working this week. Stanley therefore, isn't getting his usual outside activity and is bored. We've been dong some fetch/leave training (as a terrier, he doesn't really get "leave" but it's coming) Does anyone have any other simple ideas, please that I can do indoors which doesn't require me to move much or do a lot of reaching and bending? He's a dog that likes to interact. TIA

have a look at lick Matt's and ruffle mats.

Lick mats and snufflemats are a good idea if Stanley is a foodie. You can spread anything he likes on the Lick mat such as squeezy cheese, any sort of meat paste etc and the snufflemat works by hiding kibble or very small treats within the mat for him to find.

Other ideas might be some clicker training (Kikopup on YouTube has lots of ideas), hiding a favourite toy or treats under pots or around the room and getting him to find them.

Does he have any dog friends that you could invite round so they can let off steam around the garden?

My daughter has just rung to say she's coming on Friday with her dog, so i've only got a cuple of days to get through before OH is at home again. I'll look at Kikopup though as I dont do so much with him these days as he is generally more than happy to settle after a good walk but with the weather starting to turn it might be good to have a few home play ideas up my sleeve.

Mr Terrier's favourite indoor exercise was staircase based. He'd sit at the top, we'd stand at the bottom and throw a tennis ball to him, he'd catch it then drop it down the stairs where we'd catch it and repeat and repeat...it also helped keep him cheerful when he was having trouble with his legs. Spot also enjoyed this game. It was surprising how tiring they found it.

I love this but unfortunately Stanley doesn't understand the concept of catch, he'll chase something to bring it back for a game of "pully" but seems incapable of actually catching something. It's funny how different they all are, isn't it? Both of our previous BTs would catch, one was amazingly athletic and skilled, the other was optimistic but lacked style and elegance. Every evening we played get the raggy, tossing it over the dogs heads to each other whilst the dogs played pig in the middle. Stan just looks completely bemused and lets things bounce off his head! He does love the stairs though but I suspect only because he's not allowed to go up them!

Stiff Knees post reminded me of our old BT who used to run up the stairs with her ball, drop it, give it a head start and then chase it to the bottom. Repeat as often as the humans could stand the noise. :-)
I wonder if he would like a fluffy lure thing? Like a cat toy?

Yes he would, you have reminded me that I use to have a fluffy monkey attached to a schooling whip which he loved to chase. (actually just need my bloody knee to heal so I am able bodied again!)

A bit off thread, but this has reminded me of the evening before Mr Terrier was pts. He had gone off his legs and there was nothing else we could do for him. On his final evening we took him rabbiting in the car. We parked up and turned off the car lights until we were surrounded by rabbits and then turned on the headlights so he could watch them all run away. He absolutely loved it and was so excited. Me and OH were in tears seeing him so happy but knowing it was his last night. After about 30 minutes a police car pulled up as they had received a report that we were acting suspiciously. We explained what we were doing and he smiled, turned around and walked away leaving us to "lamp" the rabbits all evening. 🐾😍💔

They do give us lovely memories. After your post I went into my vids and found one of the two previous BTs meeting each other for the first time. My daughter had edited it and put a sound track on it (Britney Spears, I need you Baby) I haven't looked at it for several years and it brought such happy memories back of two lovely dogs. I am feeling stupidly sentimental!

I can lunge one of my dogs on a 10m flexi in a flying trot on both legs. The mental one, who likes running in circles for no reason whatsoever, obviously. I'm trying to teach the other one, it's really handy on long journeys when you need to let them stretch their legs but don't have time for a proper walk. A Canadian tourist once stopped me on a beach next to a ferry port to ask me what I was doing :p

FLEXI LEAD???!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

There was a post from an american with a fat daxie who they 'couldn't walk' elsewhere the other day, she was calling it a flirt pole, I was like no, that's a lunge whip :p.

lol at Lev :D

Our childhood terrier used to do this too, kept him occupied for ages.

We play catch with our lab, simple throws so she's not jumping around to much (arthritis) and my husband and I clap and and cheer when she catches it. She's so pleased she does a lap of honour. We're easily amused in our house!
