Hi, i have a 4 yr old Welsh Sect D Gelding - recently diagnosed with Arthritic changes in his rf coffin joint - had steroid injection and to have remedial shoeing. Can anyone advise me of their experiences / treatment of similar problems they have dealt with in a young horse - many thanks !

Hi there. My only experience of this is with a much older horse. Unfortunately apart from living permanently on bute (which sent him nuts) there was nothing else to be done. We had to have him PTS.

Given his age you might have more options available to you. Speak to your vet and get a specialist involved if you have the money or your insurance will cover it.

Hope things work out ok.

Depends on his level of lameness in relation to the level of work.

If a cripple and not in work I would seriousely consider all of your medical options and his quality of life.

If in work I would turn him out for 6 months with lots of oil, see if he comes sound, and re evaluate.

I wouldnt spend a fortune...but I am tight. Presently they are arthritic changes which suggests it isnt fully fledged arthritis. So I would air on the side of prevention and go dowm the simplest route, and progress....such as time off, slow back into work, lots of oil and whatever suppliment you think (cortaflex etc), then the occasional bute, shoeing, then vet intervention.

I am of the opinion that if you go in with the big vet things too quickly you exhaust your options and reach the end of the road more quickly.

Try NAF Superflex (god, you'd think I sold this stuff the amount I rave about it!). My athritic girl is on it and she is cantering about, also done wonders for my other horses. Worth a shot anyway. Oh and anything high oil my vet advised, so she's on Super Codlivine supplement.

Hi there,

My boy has just come back to competing after being diagnosed with arthritis in his coffin joints (both front feet)

He had steroid injections, is shod with Natural Balance shoes & is on NAF Superflex. I also use stable wraps to keep his joints warm. He is now back out jumping BSJA, though just BN /Disco for the moment, and we will try him eventing again in April & see how he goes. Most of it is playing by ear but he is back to his old self again (touch wood)
