i have owned my 12.2 mare rosanna for just under six months and i have not yet ridden her out...

...untill today. she is going strong unbalenced and giving back in walk. is there any reason for this or just general lazyness??

Also is there a decent supplement for moody mares?!

Oestress works for my mare who is seasonal in Spring.

do you mean not going forwards?? as for supplements for moody mares there are loads, NAF oestress is very good so is hormonise.

thats called napping!! do you have someone who could help you by walking with her?? this is a confidence issue most often sometimes it helps to lead them out in hand at first, what level are you at and is she schooled, just broken etc?

How old is she?
Has she been ridden out before?
Were you alone, or in company?

If she's fairly inexperienced and hacking out alone in a strange place she could be nervous, or just feel that she'd be more comfortable back at home (the 'safe' place).

If you can, try hacking in company and see how she is then, then build it up from there.

Try Crossgates Biogenics they have all manner of different sprays etc that work in harmony with your horses particular ailments. I'm a complete convert, my horse would not hack out alone and guess what....after a week on this stuff me & my horse are doing what better riders couldn't.

she is 14, been ridden out for about 4 years in total, i was riding in company with 3 other horses. i was on a group lesson with intermediate tutition..

RE: i have ridden out today with this time much much shorter reigns as instructed by my yard manager. she was not as strong as i rode her in a wilkie bit then top ring of bubble bit after half an hour she was going lighter and more forward, i also set her some bending cones to get her more supple so she might find the corners easyer...

i also rode her inside and she scared the life out of me when she almost kicked my mums horse!! she is generaly quiet but a bit protective as where she came from (wadlands leeds) used to beat her up and kick her in stable so it has been an ongoing struggle to get her confidence back

also i washed her mane and tail she enjoyed it a lot and seems to have got more effectionate towards me

One massive tip is to ride forward positively. It's so hard when a horse knocks your confidence but keep your leg on and make sure the bottom of your back is relaxed in walk (so your bottom is moving with her a bit) and make sure your hands are giving with her strides.

I know it's simple but if I get stiff and worried on Ty he's 100 times worse.....the more confident you appear the more she will hopefully....

good luck
