I'm sorry to have a bit of a rant at you, well not really a rant, but I fell off my horse yesterday and am quite sore despite having my hat on!
We were jumping and he got very strong into the first fence and got too close:

He jumped it anyway:

Although unseated me along the way and proceeded to gallop to the second:

Being so bl**dy honest he jumped it anyway:

Resulting in the pole getting caught between his legs:

And us both ending up on the floor, Red landed on me apparently and the force pushed my face into the sand:

I've had this horse for over a year now and we know each other brilliantly, fortunately I was wearing my Champion Ventair hat, the head band at the front now looks like this  :

And today my face looks like this:

I know it doesn't look particularly bad at the moment but I can to you it feels worse than it looks!
Despite wearing my hat I have a bruise on my forehead(next to my fingers), and a lovely black eye brewing, a bruise coming over my cheek and bridge of my nose, a scratched upper lip(next to my nose) and a sore neck :( No, I wasn't wearing a BP but don't feel it would really have done anything this time anyway.
I can't imagine what would've happened if I wasn't wearing my hat as I have a bit off a head ache now, have been to the hospital and the soreness in my neck is just muscle damage and my face speaks for itself, will post more pics when the bruises really start to come out! Red came out nearly unscathed, he has a scratch on his shoulder and and abrasion, like my lip almost, above his right eye.
Bearing in mind we were jumping like this 5mins before this happened:

Ooow, wouldn't like to have seen what you would of looked like without a hat on, I think little 'reminder posts' like these are a great way to make those that don't wear one re-think, after all who wants their faces re-arranging on the arena floor....not me!

Noted.
But weren't you the person who posted a pic just yesterday of you standing on your horse without a hat (!) think you need to take your own advice ;)

Excellent post!

Brilliant pics.

Sorry your head hurts, but it's way sexier than getting drunk and falling down stairs. Ibuprofen is your friend!

Wow, shocking pics.

I always wear my hat - you just never know when something like this could happen.

I hope that you recover quickly and are back in the saddle again soon with a shiney new hat.

Im really pleased you posted this, sometimes people need the shock of a few pics to make them see sense...

Ohh looks sore gosh wouldn't want to think what would have happened without a hat. I feel weird when I'm not wearing one tbh it just doesn't feel right.

Your horse is absolutly gourgeous! I absolutly love your siggy! :)

That was my friend, won't happen again, I can promise you that! I think sometimes you just need a little(or rather large) push to make you realise.
Thanks everyone, I work in the village shop and am not looking forward to going to work tomorrow :p Am dosed up on paracetamol and ibuprofen for now ;)

:D Thanks guys, would've rather him chucked me over the fence instead though! Then he wouldn't have fallen but it's just the way he is, I feel so fortunate to have a horse like him although my neck and face is telling me otherwise today :p
Will post pics when the bruising comes out, am at work in the village shop tomorrow night too, not doubt I will provide entertainment for all who enter... ;)

ooh looks nasty! hope your feeling ok now, make sure you get a new hat too! imagine how much worse it would have been if you were jumping on ard grass!

I was just so glad it hadn't been raining! Would've been lovely and solid for my face to land on...
Deffo getting a new hat, my head is fairly large though(7 1/4) so it's fairly embarassing going to buy one :p

Ouch! Gentle hugs and a large hot choccy hun. Hope you feel better very, very soon :)

As I have bored people a billion times (possibly more), I came off last September. A silly fall, a nothing fall, that resulted in a bleed on the brain :(

Youch. Glad you are one of the sensible ones who does wear their hat. And a great idea to post this as a reason why they are so important to those who don't feel the need to wear one.

Hope you are much less sore soon.

Could I just add - and make sure the hat fits and is done up!!

Sorry, its one of my personal bugbears!!

We had a lady at our show at the weekend who we politely told couldn't ride without a properly attached harness on her hat (as clearly stated in our rules) to which she replied 'but its a Patey, it will never come off'. Never? I know they are lovely hats but are they nailed into your skull then?

And tonight at a friends yard a teenager rode by with her hat done up behind her head under her hair which she assured us was ok and wouldn't come off.........

Hope both you and your lovely horse make a quick recovery.

Wow, I can't believe your friend kept snapping the pics! This looks awful, glad you're both alright.

Almost none of the riders at all on my yard wear their hats, which makes me feel a bit fuddy-duddy, but I definitely won't be joining them! It's never worth the risk.

Ooo, poor you MrsMozart! Hope you're ok now, that scan is quite a cool think to have though :p
Going to R&R tomorrow to replace the hat with a shiny new one, the same make and model as I now know how fab it is! Plus the Charles Owen ones are to oval for my round head :sigh:
Really made me think about some people on here, I know people know their horses etc. but look what happen to Courtney King Dye? in America, even the best fall off!
Red seems perfectly happy bless him, was a bit on his toes yesterday afterwards but he's very much a people person and seemed to know I was upset, just a scratch on his shoulder and some hair off his pretty little face :( Again, it could have been worse but I'm so grateful it was me that came off worse rather than him!
Kittykins: send them the link to this thread, will make them think :p

Completely agree.

I was jumping today and when I got to the fence at the end of the arena I wanted to go right, horse was going left = head first into fence! :P

My hat doesn't LOOK damaged but I've got a bit of a head ache brewing so I assume it wasn't just a 'knock'! :D

I always wear my hat as whenever I fall off I go head first...everytime!

Ouch Hattiehorse! New hat for you too me thinks :p I've had that before too, only other bad fall I've had in 8years, thought I'd broken my wrist, apparently not but it give me grief! Bless you, I usually land on my feet, lucky me eh? :D

I hope you feel better soon! I always wear my hat anyway but thats definately a good reminder for those that sometimes forget or don't bother at all.;)

ETA and i have a champion ventair - good to know they do their job!

RedCascade, HattieHorse,Thank Heavens you and MrsMozart ( I, and all who have had a blow to the head), survived. I too was wearing a hat, but the brain damage done has changed my whole way of life forever, but I am still thankful to be alive. :)
.
Please, please, please, if you have had a nasty knock on the head, even if you know there is no fracture, get a medical check-up ASAP. I was lucky.Hopefully you will be ok too,

Natasha Richardson was not.(not a riding accident, but a simple blow to the head which seemed ok )

I have cpoied this from neurosurgeon report:

Head injuries

It is not known exactly what happened to Ms Richardson.

However, leading neurosurgeon Chris Chandler said a seemingly minor blow on the head can cause life-threatening injuries.

Mr Chandler, from King's College Hospital in south London, said the effects of a blow to the head may not become apparent until several hours afterwards and, if untreated, a patient can fall into a coma.

"A blow to the head can cause a bruise or rupture a blood vessel that slowly swells, causing pressure to build up inside the skull," he said.

"In the skull there is nowhere for the brain to move to so pressure continues to grow and that swelling can cause the brain to malfunction because it can limit circulation.

"If that pressure is not relieved it can kill."

Ouch. My horse and I had a similar fall last year so I know how you're feeling!
Second Slinkyunicorn - lots of arnica!
Hope you feel better soon.

Will have to get me some arnica! Am off pain killers now, haven't had any since lunch time and am in a bit of pain, my neck and under my eye, my nose when I touch it! :(
Been to see my RI and have worked out that the force from the fall caused the hat to be launched forward, giving me whiplash in my neck, the middle dent is from the bridge of my nose and the left one is from my left eye! My head obviously hurts from that but if it wasn't my hat against my forehead it certainly would've hit the deck
ChwaraeTeg, poor you, at least you're still here! Interesting that!
