Good questions, and personally I'd be interested in the replies/results. May we know a little more about you and what you intend to do with the responses?

Well, I am a sixth form student and am currently doing a study on whether the FEI were right to ban Rollkur. I have to gather research and complete a report on my findings

Hate to be awkward, but my answer to some of that would depend on the quality of the rider, and you don't offer that option.
But will have a go.

Your questions are confusing . I have used training aids but never to encourage flexion .so how do I answer?.
LDR is not a training aid it is a description of a particular positioning of the horse during training it is not a training aid as say a Pessoa is.

I'm sorry that you find them confusing, but I would appreciate you trying to answer, I don't know how to reword the question so otherwise you don't have to take part. I appreciate your attempt though, thank you

Yes

2. Do you use any training aids (e.g. Side reins) to encourage flexion? And if so, what?

no,

.............

3. Do you know what rollkur is, please explain your knowledge of the technique

I would never use it as it appears to be the over-flexing of the neck in an attempt to achieve an "outline". I believe it does a great deal of damage to the horse's back.

4.to what extent do you agree with the technique

strongly disagree

5. Are you aware that it is banned by the FEI?

not sure

6. To what extent do you agree/disagree with the ban?

Strongly agree,

7. Do you agree with the use of rollkur in the following?
Training
warm up
competitions
general riding

No

8. What, if any, implications of rollkur do you know?

Any forcing of the horse to achieve a result will cause muscle damage and mental distress
.........

9. What, if any, benefits of rollkur do you know?

No benefit to the horse
......

10. Do you have any issues with the following training aids?
Answer with
Yes. No. Neither yes or no

LDR (low, deep and round). No - provided it is not forced.
Side reins Neither
Draw reins Yes
Martingale No
Pessoa Neither
Running reins Np
Other (please specify) .All the above answers depend on the knowledge and experience of the person using them............

Thank you in advance

Hope that helps.

1. Have you /do you compete in dressage?
Yes

2. Do you use any training aids (e.g. Side reins) to encourage flexion? And if so, what?
Yes, currently.- sometimes sidereins sometimes draw reins over back and between front legs, generally to encourage horse to stretch and work over back

.............

3. Do you know what rollkur is, please explain your knowledge of the technique
.......Yes it is extreme hyperflexion of the horses head/poll acheived by riding into very short reins, often off the curb part of a double bridle or a strong rein contact, the horses head is held in this position often for long periods and horse is sometimes also asked/made to flex head to either side whilst still in this very overbent position.

4.to what extent do you agree with the technique

strongly disagree

5. Are you aware that it is banned by the FEI?
Yes

6. To what extent do you agree/disagree with the ban?
Strongly agree,

7. Do you agree with the use of rollkur in the following?
Training
warm up
competitions
general riding - all no

8. What, if any, implications of rollkur do you know?
It damages the ligaments in the neck, causes ossification of the poll, makes it very difficult/impossible for horse to truely engage behind.

9. What, if any, benefits of rollkur do you know?
......Makes horses lift their front legs higher (allegedly) so they look flashier in tests (if you can call this a benefit)

10. Do you have any issues with the following training aids?
Answer with
Yes. No. Neither yes or no

LDR (low, deep and round). No
Side reins - Depends on use, tightness etc
Draw reins - Not a fan but can forgive their use in some circumstances
Martingale - No so long as correctly fitted (eg not too short for horse)
Pessoa - Not really a fan as I feel it makes horses hide behind contact/upset mouth due to it constantly tugging on either side of the bit as horses hind legs move.
Running reins - Not a fan, similar to draw reins so prehaps acceptable in extreme circumstances but not for long term use
Other (please specify) .............

1. Have you /do you compete in dressage?
Yes

2. Do you use any training aids (e.g. Side reins) to encourage flexion? And if so, what?

Yes, previously,

3. Do you know what rollkur is, please explain your knowledge of the technique
Rollkur is a training technique where the horse is exercised with a strong focus on head position, the head is kept well behind the vertical and the neck is curled bringing the nose towards the chest. The definition between stretching and rollkur is that the horse is held in this position for long periods of time.

4.to what extent do you agree with the technique
strongly disagree

5. Are you aware that it is banned by the FEI?
Yes

6. To what extent do you agree/disagree with the ban?
Strongly agree,

7. Do you agree with the use of rollkur in the following?
Training
warm up
competitions
general riding
NONE

8. What, if any, implications of rollkur do you know?
Rollkur restricts the horse's range of vision, causes tension in the jaw and prevents the hind end from stepping under fully. It has been implicated though not proven (to my knowledge) in stretching the nuchal ligament and causing muscle stiffness and even arthritic changes in the atlas and axis.

9. What, if any, benefits of rollkur do you know?
none

10. Do you have any issues with the following training aids?
Answer with
Yes. No. Neither yes or no

LDR (low, deep and round). Yes
Side reins, No
Draw reins, No
Martingale, No
Pessoa, No
Running reins, No
Other (please specify) with a caveat - I have no problem with any of the above gadgets on the condition they are used properly by those who know how. LDR is ok to a point but often becomes just another name for Rollkur.

Thank you in advance

I'd be interested to hear those who have said they disapprove of draw reins, but think running reins are fine, to explain what they think the difference is.
