I sold my ex racehorse mare last week to a lovely lady who promised me she would have a home for life and be brought back into work slowly and carefully. My girl was injured - she had fallen over in the field and ripped all the muscle around the stifle area - I kept her all through the rest period then my circumstances changed so I just couldnt keep her. I told the lady the exact work my horse needed to do - 4 weeks of walking then strengthening work she spoke to my vet then she signed a receipt to say she understood this. I sold her for £1000 also with the understanding that I would be given first refusals if she needed to be sold on.

This morning I saw this http://www.equine-world.co.uk/classified...p;title=16%20hh,%207yr%20Old,%20Throughbred,%20Chestnut,%20Mare%20For%20Sale

She has put the horse up for sale for £6000, no mention of her injuries with a complete pack of lies about her history!! She is saying she can go on and point to point!!

I have spoken to my vet and she said that if the horse is pushed too soon the muscle would not withstand the pressure and she will break down.

I have offered to buy her back and have contacted all the relevant organisations to take action. I think Trading Standards are going to have the adverts removed as they are wrong.

The lady emailed me a few days ago and said the horse threw her off - I am now wondering how hard she was pushing her to make her buck - she was probably in pain as this is very out of character for her!

All I really wanted to do is make people aware, so please be careful

Do not buy this horse as the advert is not telling you the whole truth!

oh goodness...poor you - there are some serious crooks out there. i cant believe what some people do - it seems the horse industry is incredibly messed up. that is just criminal, but i have no idea what you can do about it - good luck trying to sort it out

i would report her to some kind of animal welfare maybe, i know you cant report her to the rspca as they never do anything ! what she si doing is cruel ! and needs to be stopped ! i know someone on the commity of the bhs and they have a welfare department ! i will ask and see if there is anything you can do !

I have contacted all I need to contact so now I just need to wait and see where I need to go next. The lady emailed me giving me a cover up story earlier but she contradicts herself so I can see she is trying to stay out of trouble! I cant mention her name but she is in Lambourn, Berks. Please make anyone you know that may be buying a horse at the moment aware of this!

How awful, Im so sorry you are having to go through this and I hope this awful woman has some action taken against her, it makes you wonder how many times she has done this!

Jemm, this is very sad but what everybody needs to understand is that once a horse is sold it is sold, and we have no further control over what is done with it, no matter what might have been signed about first refusal, etc.

There are thousands of unscrupulous people out there who will make sympathetic noises about offering a good home, keeping the horse for life and managing injury.

Sometimes selling locally via word of mouth is the only safe way if you care about your horse's future but wish to sell it.

Thats the annoying thing, I did sell her locally, through a forum. I hadnt advertised her for this exact reason. I checked the home out and she seemed so genuine. Perhaps I should have taken longer to get to know her as she was fairly new to the forum but I was in a desperate situation. I have certainly learnt my lesson and wont be doing this again. The organisations seem to think I have quite a good case so fingers crossed!

I also wonder what will happen to somebody if they do buy her and try to do all that stuff with her.

Yes agree, there is absolutly nothing you can do about it. If she wishes to sell it on, then its tough on you. Its her horse to do as she pleases with. She isnt your horse anymore, if you wanted to keep tabs on her, you shouldnt have sold her!

Hopefully neither the horse nor the new purchaser will be hurt by the experience, except in the pocket maybe. Forums are dangerous places and although you feel like you get to know people, you don't really know them. In fact i am willing to bet there must be one or two unscrupulous people lurking on this forum just waiting for a 'what do I do with my horse' kind of post so they can PM

It doesnt seem that that is the case. She is selling the horse with an injury that could put the horse in danger. Possibly even a rider if they push her too far unknowingly. Now if I keep my mouth shut then I hear about a terrible accident I will never forgive myself for not trying to warn people. £6000 is a lot of money to lose for a horse that is injured.

Anyway thank you for all your advice and support - I have learnt my lesson and I hope that people reading about this experience can get something out of it too

Oh Dear Jemm,

I am so sorry to hear such sad news and also very bad news at he same time, some people are just not the person they make out to be sometimes, I am very glad you picked up on this and you get your lovely mare back with you before she can do anymore evil deeds, hope you manage to report her to as many organisations as possible, people need to be stopped from doing this sort of thing forcestop....Whata wonderful looking girl she is too sending possitive thoughts to you and your mare...

Thank you Tilly thats very sweet!

And Sandr - I really really hope so, although the muscle hole has healed but is very very weak. It may not be until they get her home and start working her that it gives

Jemm, I think you're doing the right thing. Hopefully you can stop her being resold onto an unsuspecting buyer.

Yes, when you've sold a horse it is out of your hands, but if more of us looked out for one another we could stop these sort of things happening.

Idealistic? Yes, but atleast you're trying! x

I put a horse out on permanent loan, drew up a legally binding agreement with the solicitor.

He was sent to this person. About a weekn ingot the laon we found that they were in breech of one of the agreed criteria. so asked why they were not comlying, they eventually put it right.

Then I found out from someone on another forum that they were about to sell/give him to a riding school down the road. Another NO-NO in the agreement.

We phoned a friend who went around and took him away that same night.

It is just so scary what goes on these days! Please just make sure you put the word out there - I dont know how many other people she is planning on doing this to.

I gave my companion mare away 2 months ago wrote a very good contract with lots of witnesses to sign it with all addresses on and the girl in leicester tried to sell my horse on as a ridden broodmare which she definatly is not I got her back last weekend she is now happily playing in my field again.

So it can be done the thought of their name in mud with the people they know sometimes is enough to scare them

Do what you can Jemm You honestly can't loose anything at least you can say you tried your best and at most you will get the horse back

Its so hard when the horses do have to go but it dosn't stop you caring about them you still feel obligated to fight for their best intrests and its only us that knows that as they were our horses good luck sweat pea chin up xxxxx

Poor you. What a nightmare. I saw this ad the other day on Horsemart or somewhere and I remember thinking what a bizarre advert it was and thinking that the horse didn't look worth £6000 because she looked like she was just out of racing and hadn't done anything since. I seem to remember there being a bit of info on her lineage - was this made up as well?

It's amazing what some people will stoop to.
