Really sorry to hear about your horse, i cant understand how people can do this to another person's horse and not be completely apologetic about it!
Its so sad that generally we only hear the bad experiences people have loaning their horses out. I've loaned my current horse for nearly a year now, and had another on loan for about 8 months prior to that. For the previous horse he was returned in fantastic condition (better then he arrived in) and his tack & rugs were all cleaned before he was collected - i wouldnt have it any other way. For the current loan, she wasnt it the best nic when i collected her and its a complicated situation with her owner's personal issues, but again, i treat her as if she is my own.
