*having a rant because I really don't feel well this morning, anyone got the symptoms for blood poisoning???*

Nearly every other post has been about parelli and NH etc recently. Can everyone please remember-
1) What works for other people may not work for you
2) There are many types of so called horsemanship, but basically there is bad horsemanship and good horsemanship, end of!
3) Parelli and other techniques are over marketed. Basically the theory is doing groundwork with your horse will improve your relationship with it.
4) Some people have very closed minds and think 'this is the way things have always been done so it is right and the only way to do this', not true. Though neither is ''I can't control my horse, as it takes the pee out of me, so I am going to spend a lot of money on stuff, join 'clubs' and by lots of other stuff with a certain brand name on it and magically my horse will become fantastic'', not true!

I have kept quiet about all this parelli stuff etc until now. My mum uses Parelli on her basically because she is scared of it, she is not doing it any harm but neither is it making any difference to be honest. I have been on a parelli course once (I was made to go!). I didn't know how to put on the stupid parelli halter thing (why on earth does it tie on, really?!) and the people there were looking at me like 'OMG she is an idiot!', although there were very nice, there were what i would say were stereotypical 'type', western saddles etc, and I was there with my jumping saddle and WBxTB, looked a bit out a place!
Anyways me and my horse trust each other, and I am not scared of him, which helps and by the end of the 2 days I was jumping him in one of stupid rope halter things which was amazing, while the some of the others struggled as their horses just didn't respect them and although I was a 'parelli' novice I have worked with horse for quite a long time so know how to handle them etc.
Where I currently work we break horses in. I would say things are done very traditionally, though I have seen my boss do join up with her horse just for fun because she is natural horseman. She also got on a 3 year old of hers for the first time in headcoller and it was fine because it trusted her completely, and had done a lot of groundwork (which is basically parelli without all the carrot sticks etc, long reining etc working the horse from the ground will have the same effect!)
Basically, in the longest EVER post is that all you really need is common sense which seems to be lacking, an open mind and not get swept up with things!
Agree???
One 5 course meal coming for reading this!!

You've just done it again.

People will come on and argue with what you've said, and there's another thread... yawn...
Feel better soon!

*hugs* domino brown. I'm feeling pretty rough this morning but that's because I went out and drank too many jagerbombs... oops!

I will share with you the funniest thing I ever saw.

I marshalled at a fun ride a few years back, there was a real mix there, from RC competitive types, through happy hackers to lead rein ponies.

Towards the end of the day a couple of ladies turned up with their horses. Funky endurance type bridles, western style saddles, festooned with ropes and other goodies that seemed to serve no real purpose in the circumstances.

One of the ladies in particular seemed to be giving off a vibe about being quite nervous about going, lots of wittering on at her horse and tugging at the reins even though the poor patient beastie wasn't putting a foot wrong.

Anyway ...a couple of hours later, when I am considering either trying to phone them or send somebody out along the route to look for them, they emerged. Nervous lady was leading her horse, well not leading really, doing various confused groundwork exercises while generally travelling forwards.

I enquired, as you do, whether there was a problem, would she need a vet or a farrier? No, she replied, I like to finish with a little walk.

Judging by the colour of her face that little walk must have encompassed the last 2 miles, all of which was uphill. It was quite clear that at some point she had lost her confidence, not sure why as the horse was still quite calm - even if it was wearing that 'here we go again' expression.

My conclusion? Yes do groundwork, it is good for you and your horse, and of course when you are doing it, it is important to have a plan. Whether that plan has to be directed by parelli type training is a choice for you. However buying the gear and the DVDs is an add-on, not an alternative.

Now then Domino, if you read the thread, this is the conclusion we have come to, and here we are with another Parelli thread :D

BTW maybe I could interest your mum in one of my multicoloured balls and/or sticks - see ads in other thread ;)

oh oh, I new person, kill people kill!

 HUH?? That doesn't make sense.

ETA Just bear in mind that not everything you read on here, is serious. Some threads may be designed to get a reaction, others to have a laugh and so on. Now you have to work out what is what :D

Sorry, what I meant was why does it make any difference how long I have been on the forum, surely we all entitled to an opinion. :)

Yes! Course you are, read my edited post above :) It takes a while to realise not everything is serious. Bit tongue in cheek etc. Don't ever let it wind you up, you'l end up going mad otherwise! :D

I didn't add anything on the other thread it was getting too long, so as there's another one I'm going to contribute to this!
I was at a Le Trec competition with Axel a few years ago, this girl turned up with this massive sign written lorry that had Parelli and Natural Horsemanship all over it. She got this horse out which proceeded to drag her everywhere and in the obstacle bit it wouldn't do anything at all not even walk over a little bridge thing, all she did was stand there and tap it with what I'm assuming is a carrot stick for about 15 mins until she was asked to leave the arena. She then took about an hour to load it back into her lorry!

I already had the opinion that it was a load of rubbish and that pretty much confirmed it tbh!

However, I know a girl who is a very good event rider and she brings on ex racehorses for a racehorse sanctuary. They are very good horses and she is always getting good results with them, she is a Parelli person but uses it in a sensible way and it obviously works for her.

sarahsum1- there are some quite funny tongue in cheek posts on this forum and its nice to not everyone take everything so seriously!

some natural horsemanship people came to our college to do a demonstration of few years ago. It was about bomb-proofing horse in NH way or something. Well the demonstration was at 5 at night. They were on the yard at 7am set up the arena with scary things and worked the said horse all day in the arena, so yerh by 5pm it was used to everything in the arena, not exactly ground breaking though! Feel a bit sorry for people who had paid money for tickets to go what the amazing techniques.

Just bear it in mind when you start reading a thread and once you have got to know who is who, you will spot the tongue and cheek a mile off :D

Enjoy your time on here :)

oooo, this morning I actually had most of those symptoms! I felt really weird, and looking at my post I am deffo suffering from ''a change in your mental state, such as confusion or disorientation'' :D
I got bitten by a horse fly, and had a reaction, my whole hand swelled up like one of those surgical gloves if you filled it with water. :(
Swelling has started to go and I feel a bit better now :)

OMG!! My hand did exactly that too last week. And my foot. It still itches..

Have you got any lidocaine? Well go get some. You'll need it. Lots of it.

Slow down a little, you seem to be doing alright with your horse, so let your mum balls up hers, unless its the same horse and if it is hogtie her and stick her in a cupboard somewhere and don't let her out till she cries surrender.:D:D
