I have had lots of conflicting advice about haylage. Can you soak it? Does it reduce the richness or does it go toxic??. I have moved my horse off fertilised grass which he could not handle and have his old hay supply which I was soaking still and he was fine but livery includes haylage. I have tested him on it and legs are filling and slight pulse is coming in lami prone foot. It is not the grass and he is coming in with no pulse and no filling and I have watched him hardly move for 2 hours before bring in. Any advice would be really helpful as him and I love his new home!

Thanks so much if you can

Yes you can soak haylage I checked this with the vet when fatty was footsore two summers ago .

Buy some Horsehage if you can't buy good hay, haylage is a bit like hay, I've found dead birds, bits of rabbits and branches all wrapped up in plastic. My horses did well on the horsehage ryegrass 2 years ago when I had no hay.

Ooh Goldenstar. Thank you. I think from reading and lurking you are bare foot too? Would you know how long is safe etc please?
Thanks so much x

Thanks the haylage is award winning best wrapped forgave or something. The issue is can I soak it to reduce the nutrients, I have no problem sourcing it unfortunately!!

I did about twelve hours and changed water twice .
Fatty ( and my others ) are do about half the year BF the rest shod .
It turned out fatty had a very thin cut on his heel I panicked and thought lami hence the soaking .
One vet did tell me that two hours with water changes is as good as twelve but doing it overnight suited me.

Thanks Goldenstar. Have been advised to rinse and see how that goes for now......also going to try feeding some sodium bicarbonate as well to see if it buffers the acid which I think is the issue.

Yes, you can soak haylage, just put a lot of water on it till it's really wet. Good Luck OP.
