Well, I have had my latest travelling set up for 6 months so it MUST be time to change - again!!!

Bought lovely new-ish Rice as found by lovely HHO-er. Great to tow etc, I adore it. The TB refuses point blank to have anything to do with it. Will load and travel in anything but the Rice. Git! Soooo have decided to go back to an Equitrek Space Trekker L as I know anything loads in them. Still don't really like them though

We are also getting rid of the Defender as I am fed up of getting wet  and changing to a Sorento XE. We are also getting an older XC90 as we are moving to the middle of nowhere and we both need 4x4 ability and commute.

So, does this all add up to being safe to tow etc?

Sorento XE Manual Diesel: Max Towing Capacity 3000kg

Equitrek Space Trekker L: Unloaded weight 1220 kg (Max 2600kg)

Large Ginger Horse: 750kg

16.2hh TB: 550kg

Total = 2520kg so I am safe to tow both with the Sorrento?

The XC90 has a towing capacity of 2250kg so I can tow just one and the Equitrek but am safe?

I think this is right but I would be very grateful for a second pair of eyes to sanity check! :)

1220+750+550=2520 so ok for sorento 3000 limit
1220+750=1970 so ok for xc90 2250 limit

Don't forget to include hay nets, saddles, people

Personally I would make sure I was a under than going right to the limit, can't so the engine much good if its struggling or constantly pulling a heavey load

Your thinking is not quite right ....

The engine is designed to cope with a certain weight but that weight is not just the towing weight but the overall weight of vehicle and trailer

This is why the vehicle will have the legal weights on a plate and always in this order
GVW - the max weight the vehicle can be
GTW - the max weight the vehicle and trailer can be when weighed together
Axle 1 - front
Axle 2 - rear

Lets say the GVW is 2800 and the GTW is 5800
The usual thing a manufacturer will do is the list the towing capacity at 3000
That 3000 happens to be 5800 GTW minus 2800 GVW in MOST cases

The same engine power will be need for both these examples -
Vehicle weighing 2200 and trailer weighing 3000
Vehicle weighing 2800 and trailer weighing 2400

It does not just depend on using up all the towing capacity as to whether the vehicle can cope better or not
