I just had a phone call from the yard, my heart sank, but it was OK I'd just forgotten to leave a cheque for the dentist! PHEW!

The reason I panic when I see the yard calling my phone is that my old horse's joints are getting worse. He's still got a strong character and is loving his routine and is eager to come in and go out every day, but he keeps tripping over and falling . It's happening about once a week that we know of, and on Saturday he fell over when I was leading him slowly to the field. There was nothing to trip on, the path was good flat ground, but he didn't pick his feet up properly and he fell over onto his tummy and scooted along the ground due to the force of it all. It was awful to witness, but he got up and he was OK after a couple of minutes.

I posted a month or so ago about how I couldn't pick his front feet out as he wont bend his knees. Well, I worked out a way of being able to do this, and I've been managing, so I was really pleased about that.

He's on daily bute (2 sachets), plus feedmarks zerobute, so I can give him maximum pain relief for arthritis. He's 33, and we've had him for most of his life, in fact he's been in the family for most of my life!

I think I am going to make the dreaded phone call to my vets before high summer. He's a shire cross and over the past few years he hasn't coped well in hot weather. Last summer he was stabled during the day and during the hottest days I had to have him hosed down every 3 hours as he overheated, even though I'd clipped him.

This is all much harder than I thought it would be. Some people are telling me it's time to do it now, and other people are telling me no way because he's still so happy and full of life (He has A LOT of fans on the yard). Both points of view are correct. In his mind he's still a young man. However his limbs are completely worn out :(

If he were a person he would be a wonderful old man in a wheelchair and he'd enjoy telling stories of his great life over a pint of ale and his favourite pie :D

Sorry this is quite a long, pointless post, but it did make me feel a little bit better writing it. I wondered about adding some photos of him, but would that make people sad if they see his cheeky little face?

Ohh bless! I dont think it will hurt to post some pictures of him. I think we all have love for the oldies so would be lovely to see him.

I think you will know when the time is right. I cant imagine it will be easy at all, but you want to be able to make the decision when you can see his quality of life is not too good.

Looking forward to the cheeky faced pix! xx

OK. Here's some old pics taken in the early 1990's when he was just a young man!

and this is him last spring. He's about 32 yrs here. His condition is amazing. I look after my boys well. He's been retired for 6 years but I still always keep him tidy. His back has dipped a lot, as he didn't used to have much wither, but he still has good muscle tone even though he's not been ridden for years.

This is him now. He looks older, still in great condition for 33, until you see him trying to walk. It's heart breaking.

Ohh he is lovely! Very sweet boy! and he does look very well for 33, well done you!

I know you can get carried away on supplements (I know i do as will try anything to keep her going!), but i give my girl cider apple vineger too as that is also supposed to help?

Good luck hun and as i said, you will know in your own mind when will be the right time xx

He sounds and looks like a lovely horse - who it will be hard to say goodbye too.

I'd be making the call soonish....... (((((( ))))))

He is a stunning boy and a complete credit it 2 you for the way he looks now with that glossy coat, but my vet once said that its better to make that desision a month to early rather than a day to late.

I hope it all works out for you x

try him on aviform SUPPLEAZE GOLD worked well on mine who is a spring chicken at 31 yr old:D, the MSN is an anti inflamatory and will help on top of the bute. i also keep putting him on the walker and fence his field under the pasture paradise scheme as it makes him walk more than just sat in the field.

you have to keep them moving as much as possible

hope he bounces back and i am sure you will make the best decision for him in the end

He's a beautiful boy! But I must say only you will now when the time is right to phone the vets, if you choose to. Don't let yourself be persuaded either way by his fans or anyone else!

Oh hun. Hugs to you. It's not a happy thing to have to do. I had to choose with Tiggy, and she was only four. I looked at her one day and she couldn't stale properly and I knew it was just going to get worse, never better. I loved her so much.

aw, he is lovely. Agree with the others, you will know (or he will tell you) when the time is right. I am dreading having to make that decision but I think that you have to see it as the final gift you can give them and allow them to go with dignity. When the time comes spoil him rotten and he will go happy. I hope you find a way to keep him comfortable and steady for a while longer, love to you both xx

Beautifully worded.
