Please can we stop sniping at people? A rant

Well said FDC

By all means disagree with someone, make your point if you think they need hauling up on something, even make it twice if you think you haven't been heard.

But what I really find uncomfortable is when the same thing is dredged up time and again on subsequent new posts that person makes

[/ QUOTE ]

Have to agree with this. Spitefulness is a very ugly habit and it would make me not want to know that person in real life; it's also very childish and ignorant. By all means disagree but don't drag it up in every post afterwards too, it's boring and not nice.
Life is too short and precious to hold grudges and never let them go however they were caused IMHO.

I think the OP is correct and has a right to say exactly what she said, it's her opinion and everyone has different opinions that's the whole point of asking other people advice on a forum like this.

The sad thing is that some posters get into being extremely bitchy, but the worst thing of all is the intense sarcasm at times and 'kidnapping' posts, I wonder if the old saying 'sarcasm is the lowest form of wit' should be posted at the very top of every page here by HHO. I ususally just feel sorry for people like that they must have issues in RL and only be able to take them out on other posters here under anonymity, leave the OP alone she is making a very valid point.

I enjoy sarcasm

Me too, I'm regularly sarcastic

I guess I'm just not that witty

LOL I don't tend to use it on the forum, though - hardly ever comes across right.

Ooohh Ferrero.....nice. Pass them my way pls MrsM

Well- I too enjoy sarcasm and the odd (frequent) flippant childish remark ( I am allowed this- I am 40 next weekend- I am having a midlife crisis

)

I think when people join this forum they dont necessarily understand the banter.....people on their high horse about something that many people are likely to be narked at will obviously get short shrift.......but yes, if they apologise or make their point a bit clearer ( and lets face it, its easy to mis-construe a post, or a text where you wouldnt in a face to face conversation)....then it should be over and done with......apart from a bit of mild teasing now and again...that's allowed isn't it?

And if the person treating you like a tw@t because you were a tw@t is also acting like a tw@t to do this do they have to be treated like a tw@t also? or is it OK because they are treating original tw@t like the twitty tw@t that they behaved like??

^^ not pointed at anyone in particular. That is really what came to mind when I read above post. My mum tells me I'm 'special'

If people make 'silly mistakes/comments' (and more than once!), then it is up to that person to post an apology and everyone then moves on. It's happened before and will no doubt happen again.

If people make such 'silly mistakes/comments' and don't apologise, then a number of people will continue to respond in a less than friendly manner.

Edited to add: certainly E, coming right up

Yes, I think that is fair enough and an apology would have gone a long way.

I suppose I am assuming there is a 'hidden' apology in that this person has packed it in and also thinking that it takes guts to publicly apologise, so trying to be more lenient here. But, I don't have kids and maybe if I did I would know not to let them off so lightly!

Having been subject to this sort of treatment pretty much fromt he day I joined the forum I have very little sympathy. If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen, this is a forum based on a pro hunt magazine...many people on this forum are constantly baying for blood.

My philosophy about forums is don't type anything you wouldn't say to someone's face.

I think it's way too easy sometimes to forget that there's a human in front of a screen somewhere who could be offended/upset by things. That goes for those posting silly comments and those who then respond.

Mrs M is the hot choccy the low fat stuff? Still trying to lose weight. Carrot stick anyone?

Think the one I liked has been sold so suppose that's fate's way of telling me to sort Arch out first. Should have taken the sensible approach from the start! Will see what the verdict is when he goes back to vet next month before making a decision. In the meantime, have banned myself from looking at horsemart!! It helps that work's been manic so haven't just been looking to pass the time at work!

ETA - The only carrot sticks I contemplate are short, orange and end up in my tummy!

Thanks but already have my friend's (the one I didn't take on Sunday) she's broken her ankle so the timing's quite good. My horse is lame and his rider's lame. Arch is back doing 10 mins of walk now though and seems ok so far.

I'm just thinking long term. Arch has never been the most enthusiastic jumper (probably down to his feet as he's such as sweetie in other ways) and I just don't know if I can make him do it again knowing that it could be hurting him. I really want to carry on with the jumping though, so if I can't carry on with him I'll need something else.

I was really hurt at something someone said on one of my posts once. But then they replied to another really nicely, so I dont think they were being funny in the first post - its just the way things are read sometimes... get that pinch of salt out.

Oi, you been sniffing the hot choccy fumes?!

grin.gif

Put me down for a hot choccy with marshmallows and squirty cream, and a vote for, if you want something put behind you, you might like to try apologising.
I don't believe I was rude to T.T. - but I did get it in the neck for expressing my view that I didn't believe half she said.
I'm not sure half the members of any forum are quite what they say they are, and quite a bit of what she said originally about her wealth and talent didn't add up, as far as I was concerned, and still doesn't.
But as my husband is so fond of pointing out, any one of us could be a hairy lifer in Iowa State Penitentiary for all most of us know - it pays not to believe everything you read on the interweb
laugh.gif

However, in as much as she is obviously a real person of some kind, whether or not as wealthy, well connected and 'bloody good' as she says she is, she will find, in life as in nag and dog, that if you build yourself up, you'll have further to fall.
It's not a nunnery, it's a forum, and no one can be stopped saying what they think, within reason, unless they're lucretia obviously
wink.gif

Adding a rant on the topic doesn't help that much, does it?
Chocolate HobNob, anyone?

I don't think you got it in the neck as such
wink.gif
Just merely raising another view point
grin.gif

To the OP, I agree, I do think sometimes people go too far but as has been pointed out to me, that is just people being people, so be it
smile.gif
I will rise to things I dont like and make it quite obvious I dont like it, but I very rarely keep bringing the same point up again and again..... my memories not long enough

Thing is KatB I am just kind of fascinated by these things. In the latest thread, I can hear the kid talk, the way things are phrased ... I know a dozen of her. And none of them are from the background she says she is! Likewise, I know a dozen of who she says she is, and she ain't one of them!
It's not against the law, like I say, I'm sure a good half of posters are not QUITE what they crack them selves up to be, to some extent, it's a good game trying to spot the disguises, but you musn't play hurt when someone bites and reacts to the person you SAID you were.
Maybe I am not an overweight mother of two, with a field full of money consuming ponies, a dislike of getting on with my work, and a penchant for squirty cream.
Maybe I am in fact, a fit fireman with a penthouse and a Lamborghini, just trying to lure you all into my boudoir. You never know, do you?!

I agree completely, however, thinking like that can raise preconceptions of people that may or may not be correct, and you may never know the truth
wink.gif
And tbh, I dont give a damn if someone is asking a question, I will answer it. As I will probably have no other dealings with them, I dont care if they are millionaires or not
smile.gif
.

What I dont like is people guessing or presuming the person is lying, and responding to a sensible question saying so, with no real backing (and to be honest, as above I dont give a damn anyway!) I think it just creates unnecessary atmosphere?

I prefer to keep it simple, answer the questions asked on the threads, take things on face value and react to what is written, not whats behind it etc etc, and continue with my life as normal
