Hi,

I have only ever posted once before and tend to just read other posts but just out of interest would like to know what you think of my horse, his confirmation etc.. The bad, the good, and the ugly please :o

He is a 16.2hh TB, rising 5yo. As a 2yo he raced 5 times and retired as 'to slow' although he's a very sensitive horse and can get upset easily but otherwise a dope on a rope with a demanding character

First picture is as a 3yo
2nd picture is as a 4yo (Feb 2011)
3rd picture is as a rising 5yo (Feb 2012)

In Oct11 we had some issues riding/mounting after all checks he had a scope and it turned out he had ulcers,(which are now treated) at the same time he somehow managed to fracture his skull between his eyes in his stable and after no success with anitbiotics he had an op to remove bone chips. He is now on the mend although lost all his top line and at the time alot of weight (He has put most of this back on)

What do you think?

He's horrible - totally unsuited to you - think you should send him down to me IMMEDIATELY :D :D :D

He looks gorgeous, just my type, I went through a lot with my big ginger one when I first got him too (hospitalised twice with colic, then he broke his shoulder). Had him 10 years, he's 29 now but still a fabby fabby horse :D

He's lovely...but that saddle cover clashes with his gingerness terribly.

You need to rethink the colours please.

You can have him if you really like but dont be led into his the self sense of security it will come back to haunt you... only today i did a frankie dettori dismount off him while my kind mother held onto him like a kite

I do apologise, it does clash but i cant help but make him a little bit girly. Saying that its been hidden in the tack box for the last 12 months

And there it should stay.

Respect the gingerness.

(P.S. You weren't lying with your username - were you :p)

Aww hes a handsome chap! I wont comment on conformation etc.. because i have no skill what so ever in that department, hes a lovely boy, and i wish you all the best for the future with him- fingers crossed youve had all your bad luck now!

What are your plans for the future with him?

I do hope someone can come along and critiques his confirmation for me...

No real plan for him at the moment, i originaly wanted to event but as he's young we've done lots of schooling with a dressage instructor so wanted to go that way first then some jumping xc/sj just and alrounder really.

At the moment though i'll just be happy to have a ride on him (He's only just coming back into work and is quite challenging)

*whispers conformation* :D

Ok so they are photos which never look as clear as in the flesh.

His offside hock looks like it is capped
Can't really tell because of over reach boots but pasterns look like they could be a wee bit long, ditto cannons in first photo.

Possibly a bit "bosomy". Looks like a young horse that has not done much which will obviously change as he matures and does more so will not comment on bum, neck topline

Nice snow gear :D

Good luck with him

Thanks cronkmooar! Yes he does have a capped hock. What issues can arise from long pasterns/cannons? He also dishes with his front legs which has improved over time but is still noticable but doesn't seem to cause a problem at the moment.

What does 'bosomy' mean? His bottom did build up with work and was nice and round but with muscle loss has an odd shape

Ahhhh he has a lovely face, I like him.

I wouldn't say any of those (very nice) pictures are "proper conformation shots".

Looks like you have a really nice horse :D

[whispers] ps - please bang his tail....

Long pasterns can be hard to keep sound - but there are many examples out there that work perfectly soundly and have no problems - ditto cannons - my personal taste would be for shorter cannons but he is a tb.

His whole bum and neck will come back so not even worth commenting on - get out on some hills if possible.

bosomy is where his chest looks a bit protruding - it might just be the way he is stood and if he is lacking in tone at the moment you would think this would alter if not the photo

Horses with short canon bones have less knee action and are better at extended trot. Those with long canons tend to have more knee action and can develop a 'hackney' type trot. Great for piaffe and passage-think Totilas(sp)
Ginger horse also has length from point of hip to stifle and a long pelvis region. This indicates potential power and is often found on exceptional, big moving horses.

So as others have said. Get him up some hills(his stifles look weak and this will help strengthen them as well as muscling up the quarters)
Make sure you are engaging the back end, perhaps by using leg and seat and keeping slightly behind the vertical with your chin up,rather than using draw/running reins.
He looks worth the patience and effort.:)
