Please define a.... eek.. cob..

A workmanlike head, which must be honest in appearance, a bold eye, and the head must be in proportion to the body.
The neck should be well set on with a definite crest. A sloping shoulder, where an upright shoulder will lead to a short action.
The body should be square i.e. you can put a box around it and the back should be short and the ribs well sprung.
The quarters round and peachy and the tail well set on.
Short cannon bones, which should be sufficient to support their short compact bodies. Good flat knees. Hocks clean and no signs of coarseness.

This.

There is no mention of feathers or colour - they provide the difference between a 'traditional' or vanner and any other type of cob.

It's also interesting to note 'Definite crest' and 'peachy' quarters.

My cob fits that description to a 't'. He isn't an overweight sport horse - you can see his end rib and feel all of them but he has a crest (cut late as well as being a cob) and a peachy bottom. It is just the shape he is - in the same way he has very short legs, huge shoulders and a huge chest.

Lots of big horses are 'cobby', some even have cobs of some description in their breeding but if they don't fit the decription above then they're probably not cobs!

And, as with any breed or type, every representative is different - some are ploddy, some sharp.

This is him in action doing Elementary dressage (for which he has to be fit not fat!). Mike (riding him) is 6'2" so you can see how much leg he takes up as he's only 15.1hh.

Please excuse his grumpy ears - he wasn't enjoying the sun.

Shilisdair would, of course, have something very different to say about cobs! :D

I have always wondered about this.
My boy ticks all the boxes for being a cob, but i know that his mum was a standardbred (no idea what his dad was) does this mean he can still be classed as a cob?

If he looks like a cob (see descriptions above! :)) he probably is a cob! It's a type not a breed.

I've seen beautiful cobs from 'normal' IDs, ISH arab x etc.

But as jhoward says - pics required!! :)

Yeah ... but you're going to love it!

lol you are very right, he is a git on the ground, but has the most gentle nature really.. ridden.. well I irode him through a shoot... all was going well until a buzzard landed beside us.. it was a thelwell moment we both pooped our bits!! but yes I do like him. and am looking forward to next year when I can get reschooling, teach him some manners and actully get to know him!

Does surprise me that for all his bolshyness he is actually fairly sensitive...

Here he is, he has still muscled up a little more since these pics as he was only 4 years and 3 months old. He isn't too fat either, i do try and keep the weight off him!!! And yes that is a crazy hot air balloon coming down in the field behind him and he hardly battered an eyelid (as long as i kept his attention on me!!!) :D

see to me, and please dont take offence, but to me he the classic type that could be fat and called a cob, when really to me he is just a well built horse..
