The action of the pelham for me, friend has been recommended one for her horse.

She would be using it with double reins.

Thanks Guys

It brings the head down, its got plain poll action from the shank and curb action from the curb chain

Two reins is ideal as it works like a snaffle until you bring the curb rein into action

is that because of the curb chain ??

sorry, just dont understand them, using a bubble bit, or gag raises the head, so how does the pelham lower the head ???

No it would be the poll pressure more. Using the lower rein would give leverage, but as there is a curb chain that leverage will not be lost, if you see what I mean? The leverage and the curb chain will encourage the horse to give with the jaw and bend at th poll (Hopefully!)Unless it is a jointed pelham and then a certain amount is lost through the "break" of the bit. TBH can't see the point of a jointed pelham myself though.

A pelham has a fixed cheek, whereas a continental gag slides and has a mixed uppy downy message. A pelham is a clear 'down'

it's a ported straight bar.

So it could encourage the head to bend but not necessarily lower. The horse has a habit of tanking off with head down you see !!!!

sorry, I personally dont like pelhams cause I have never understood how they work

Horse will probably back off it a bit tbh. A ported straight bar is agreeable to a lot of horses. In my experience it would bring the head down as well. What is it ridden in at the mo?

i ride in a vulcanite pelham with 2 reins, as my boy is definatly happier in it...im not sure if i would ride in a ported pelham though...

however when riled i dont have any brakes at all but i can tuck his head easier between his legs which slows him down slightly......

Personally I am not a fan of continental gags, although have used them occasionally.

Pelhams are a good bit to try and useful for reschooling too!

The port you are referring to is probably a cambridge dinky one, which will do nothing than over a weeny bit of tongue relief.

Now you could get a coscoquero or hanoverian they have bigger ports design to work on the roof of the mouth when the curb is used. Different kettle of fish altogether and only for riders with good hands!
