Tinsel gets everywhere! I hate the stuff. When we took the tree down last night I had to hoover all through to get rid of the damn stuff. Hateful.

Here's hoping she'll soon be over the worse and back home with you.

[/ QUOTE ]

I despise tinsel, but the children were given some at school for something to do with their nativity. It was wrapped around the top of the bannister, so heaven knows how she got hold of it!

So so pleased to have her home.

Bet it's all gone now and banned forever more!

Glad she has perked up.

It was banned when I got my first house... lol

but I took it all down last night and have hoovered the house to within an inch of its life

Good news! And I have warmed considerably to your OH as well, I can see him standing there in the surgery now, in his frock coat, top hat, mutton chops and with his walking cane saying 'Do you intend to hold our puppy to ransom sir?' like an extra in Pride and Prejudice
grin.gif

Sorry, I am made up for you, that just tickled my (random) sense of humour

Great news,, glad she is on the mend. You've gotta be due a run of good luck in 2010 Charlie,, you've had such rotten luck this year:). Fingers crossed Rosie will be back to herself soon.

Been trying to catch updates at work during the day and was so pleased to read that she is home this evening.

For what it's worth please don't be so hard on yourself, I know you where extremely stressed last night, but you really have done nothing wrong. Whether a puppy or a child you really can't watch them 24/7 and you sound like the most caring owner - sometimes bad things seem to happen to all the wrong people.

Here's to a bouncy puppy on the morning.

JDx

I'm so glad shes on the mend.
Our lab puppy ate all sorts of awful things, lego, marbles, plastic soldiers, but thankfully suffered no ill effects, it must be the lab digestion! Don't feel bad though, they are horrors for swallowing things they shouldn't.

I did have to stifle a giggle... for all that he can be a prize idiot he did tell them what for....

And he got an extra large vodka and lemonade tonight as the kids tell me whilst I was on the floor howling in tears (when we thought she was dead) he had his mouth round hers and was slapping her round the back of the head, which is apparently what made her take the huge breath. He says doggy mouth to mouth is slobbery.....
crazy.gif
I didnt see this as I was so upset at seeing her 'die' I had my eyes closed and was wailing like a banshee
blush.gif

Charlie does not recommend slapping a puppy round the back of the head to bring it round....

The diagnosis was having eaten tinsel and fluff.... or as a friend of mine said... tinselitis
smirk.gif
shoudnt giggle, but just so so pleased to have her home and for there to appear to be no lasting damage. She's fast asleep on OH's knee having been handfed and given her anti sickness medicine
smile.gif

She is one incredibly lucky puppy....

here she is tonight :

Just a thought, K.

I see she has some fluffy toys. I presume, just like Harvey's, they are proper dog toys too. I was alarmed at how much fluff comes off Harvey's fluffy duck. First I realised was when he was "yacking" on bits of it. I have taken it off him.

Just something to consider, with you saying "fluff and stuff".
smile.gif

Wow, that still sounds like a very severe reaction to eating tinsel and fluff, my bitch managed to eat two pairs of tights and we only realised because she went off her food and she was then x-rayed, for the vet to see them wound around her guts
blush.gif

After removal, he handed them back to my mother in a plastic bag. Nice.

Anyway, glad she is on the mend.

Jasper ate a toddler's sock once and the first I knew about it was when I found it in his pooh one day.

I had been wondering where the sock had gone. It was Matt's favourite "Thomas the Tank" socks too. Looked perfect in the faeces, but I couldn't bring myself to remove it and wash it for re-use. lol

yes, I did think that after!! The santa toy we bought her from pets at home, and some of the fluff that she vomited was red, so only could have come from that. We're taking it back at the weekend to tell them.

Jack once ate a balloon and like Patches, the first i realised was finding it in his poo.
Rosie has got a sensitive tum, we have to be so so careful about what we give her as almost anything can give her the runs. Even a sliver of ham on xmas day had her pooing for Britain
blush.gif

The only thing she likes and that gives her solid poos is Iams puppy complete with a teensy bit of caesar mixed in.
She's a chunky pup, but a senitive one it would seem. We think last night she was perhaps trying to bring up some of the contents and maybe it got stuck in her throat? Not sure, but she's been sick last night at the vets and again this morning, and seems much much better now.
smile.gif

yes, on her righthand front leg on her 'knee' joint.... only a teensy bit of fur gone though, I suppose she has tiny veins?

The best pic I can get, she's curled up alseep (it's just above the black dot, the black dot is a spot of dried blood)

ETA!
shocked.gif
oooh, now I've looked they've shaved from her armpit down to her knee joint on the inside! cannot get a photo of that (and don't think it's show as she's white and light tan there) but they've shaved two places. perhaps the smaller one was just for a jab or something?

TBH I think PAH will just tell you dogs should not be left unattended with toys and damaged toys should be taken away from them (like it says on the label/tag).

Puppy teeth are so sharp, you are better off with the nylon teething bones, than fluffy toys (much as they might like them).

I think all dog toys with the exception of a very few have that on the label, the only think I ever left my dogs alone with was made by Nylabone or Kong and even then for very short periods.

I agree. Harvey only gets his fluffy toy when we're actively playing with him. I do pop a nylabone in the crate with him to entertain him, should he get bored whilst he's left (if I'm out riding etc) but all other toys are removed when he is unsupervised.

Fluffy toys don't last long, you're right. I've had to perform some life saving surgery on one or two already.

Henry tends to sit next to me looking concerned while I stitch up Mr Quacky Duck (again!) So far this holidays I have had to sew up a hole in his bottom, reattach his head, and reinsert his quacker.

I'm thinking about taking some exams and actually becoming a veterinary surgeon
wink.gif

To be honest they didnt seem at all interested in the fact she'd stopped breathing. I told the vet a couple of times and he just went 'oh... right'. They think maybe she was vomiting and something coming up got tuck in her throat?

Jut for the record... the huge fluffy dog you see is the toy from her litter and I've puled at the fur and it doesnt come out. She has that in the kitchen with her other toys which are kept in a basket on the side. I'd been through them all trying to find a favourite to take to the vets for her... but when we came home with her I had to cook dinner so had taken her bed from her crate and popped it down on the floor whilst i cooked so i could keep an eye on her. The doggy toy has a cavity in it's belly for a hot water bottle, and I'd popped one inside to keep her cosy as the kitchen is chilly
smile.gif
hence why she's laying on it.
She has two kong bones (one a dental thingy) and a kong 'dummy'. When we go out she goes in her crate with her bed, those three toys ad water. i dont even leave her alone with food.

God that's unbelievable!! You'd think it would be the first thing they'd do, try and get a tube down her throat to check for a blockage or help her breathing? You haven't got my useless vet have you
smirk.gif
Hope she's better soon.

Why on earth would a vet try and put a tube down her throat if she was breathing O.K. on arrival??

Vets tend to listen to all information given, but treat according to the symptoms in front of them.

Couple of things bothering me....

1st - Please tell your OH, that smacking a puppy (or anything on the back of the head) is unlike to shift any foreign object from the throat, but could potentially cause brain damage or concussion. Much better a slap on the back and if that fails abdominal thrusts.

The 2nd thing that has confused me is you said that you had been using this vet for years (hence your indignation of being expected to pay before you left with Rosie), but previously said you had changed vets as weren't happy with the care they gave Jack, so have you gone back to your original vets??
crazy.gif

Happy New Year and lets all hope Rosie has a happy and safe one, with no more dramas!

Er, perhaps the vet was able to see quite clearly with his own eyes that the dog was not in respiratory embarrassment!!!! Funnily enough they are amply qualified to do that - would you have preferred him to sedate him, pass a tube, hook him up to oxygen and then leave him to 'doubly oxygenate' before continuing the examination?

Does this thread have to turn into a dig against veterinary staff - incase you hadn't realised they actually cared for and got well the primary poster's dog! Besides which, why shouldn't you expect to pay for your vet bill when you go to collect your dog???? Go to Tescos, do the Xmas shop and pay in installments do you? It really is about time that people showed a bit of respect for all the good that vets and nurses do - and not try to run down, humilate and embarrass the poor vet for asking for payment (who, incidently, as a human being with feelings, is going to be less likely to want to assist you in the future) - which, quite frankly, he shouldn't have needed to. You should have turned up ready to pay.
