Went to hunter trials today and my lord my horse had no brakes at all - he was bolting straight after the fence even though we got clear he was going too fast to do the turns i needed to get my time back - he is a 15.2 arab rode in an eggbutt snaffle at minute but i bought him a wlikie a couple of months ago and he just objected to it !! can any one help

a horse at our yard who was ridden in a snaffle kept tanking off, and being strong so they changed the bit to a waterford - the horse cant get hold of the bit so easily and tank off. I think with these things its a case of try a few and see what suits the horse - good luck!

After trying loads of bits I bought the Neue Schule Universal Tranz Lozenge (link attached). It is FANTASTIC. My cob took to it straight away, he mouths away on the salox! He came with a Myler comfort snaffle and I had no brakes at all! He can be really strong. This bit is so good 'cause you can use it in so many different ways - (like a hanging cheek, like a gag, with a curb strap or without, or with roundings) it is really adaptable to different activities, and makes it good value too. The mouthpiece is gentle with its shaped lozenge, but you can experiment with different types of poll/curb etc pressure to find what works best for your horse. There are also different variations of mouthpiece if you felt that a lozenge isn't right for your horse.

I've been really pleased with it and would definitely recommend it, particularly if you're having trouble finding the right bit for your horse.

You can try them out at too, if you google "hire horse bit" you'll find placed that you can loan different bits from.

Good luck! x

oh I don't envy you, it's a minefield when it comes to bits. I hunted my old horse in a waterford and it was just right for him, absolutely brilliant so might be worth a try. My current horse is extremely strong and a Waterford doesn't work. This is when you go down the path of Pelhams, gags, combinations, barbed wire etc :)
Did he feel like he was grabbing the bit and running away or locking onto one side? Was he pulling his head down and tanking? To find the right bit you need to look at how he was tanking off as to what bit would work for you.
