I'm currently studying horse management and as part of my course I have to do an investigation project into the types of bedding different people use.

How often do you clean your horses stable out? They get a full muck out once a day and are skipped out 2-3 more times throughout the day



How much on average do you spend on bedding per week? It's included in my livery


On average how many bags/bales of bedding do you use a week? Probably a bale of shavings and 4 bags of wood pellets per week


How do you store your bedding? Outside on pallets



How do you dispose of your bedding? On a muck heap


How many hours per day on average do you keep your horse in its stable? During the winter, about 19. But in the summer they live out 24/7.


Does your horse suffer from any respiratory problems? No

1 (straw) on part deep litter, some wet taken out everyday, cleared fully probably between once a week/fortnight depending on how dirty he is! ;-)

£6 straw
£7/14 shavings depending on time of year and amount of time spent in the stable

On average how many bags/bales of bedding do you use a week?
4 bales of straw
1/2 bags of shavings

How do you store your bedding?
In individual storage area at the yard

How do you dispose of your bedding?
Muck heap at the yard - taken away once a month/every 6 weeks

How many hours per day on average do you keep your horse in its stable?
Depends on the time of year, turned out around 7am all year round, then in around the time it gets dark so at the moment about 5ish so about 14hrs in winter; 10-12 in the summer

Does your horse suffer from any respiratory problems?
No

If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be?
I would love to use shavings for all the horses but it is too expensive - the one on shavings is too dirty on straw and much more managable on shavings; they all have rubber mats at the front of the stable, if I could they would have matting throughout as well as a full bed (slightly thinner than now but still a decent amount)

Cost! Shavings works out a lot more expensive than others but is more time effective

If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be? Cheaper!! lol and always good quality. Mostly it is but sometimes a bit dusty.

How do you dispose of your bedding? collected on a trailer, then spread back into farmers fields


How many hours per day on average do you keep your horse in its stable? its open onto a pen, so theye in and out 24/7


Does your horse suffer from any respiratory problems? yes on shavings


If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be? nothing, but i'd get a solid floor so I cold muck out every day :)

approx 1-2 bales as he isnt in for long

I would prefer it if he were on shavings as he eats the straw and he is tidier on shavings

small stable has rubber matting with thinnish layer of shavings over part of it. The other stable has shavings
small stable cleaned out daily, larger poo picked and deep littered for up to 3 weeks

depends, 2 shavings or 1 medi-bed.

I always keep a bale outside stable, rest goes in hay container.

On muck skips.

ooh... 16 hours a day (roughly).

None.

If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be?
Bigger shavings bales! or make Medi bed avaliable in a bulk order :D I love it. Handy does well on it but so expensive! Lasts us a while though.

They share a barn when they come in - it's probably about 50' x 45' - their bed is about 30' x 14'.

What type of bedding do you use in your horses stable?

Straw.

How often do you clean your horses stable out?

Skipped out last thing at night + then full muck out in the morning.

How much on average do you spend on bedding per week?

Not sure - if they're in every night for a week probably around £5?

On average how many bags/bales of bedding do you use a week?

Usually 4 or 5 slices off a huge bale.

How do you store your bedding?

In the corner of the barn.

How do you dispose of your bedding?

On the muck heap, which gets spead on the fields once it's rotted.

How many hours per day on average do you keep your horse in its stable?

Nil! They only come in if the weather is bad. When we had deep snow they were in for 14 hrs. Usually no more than 12 hrs.

Does your horse suffer from any respiratory problems?

We have one with mild COPD.

If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be?

I'd love perfect quality every time!

Winter - 24hrs if the weather is bad but normally 15hrs
Summer - 8 to 10 hrs

No

Does your horse suffer from any respiratory problems? did have developed COPD at age 8 a prevelent age for diagnosis. No problems as change of stable with window on side and soaked hay, bedding has always been the same

We also have rubber mats, so find straw smellier on that. On concrete it works well. Used to have shavings, but can't justlfy paying that much anymore, and I prefer straw. Shavings make treating injuries harder, as it sticks, and straw works better with mud rash as it is warmer around their legs...

The wood chips would be a bit less dusty!

Mixture of Sundown Gold (very large flake shavings) and Comfi-bed (It's a bit like bedmax, but cheaper :))

Every morning, full muck out. He's only in over night

How much on average do you spend on bedding per week?
Rougly £9 per horse, except little tink the mini shet, who's on a tiny bit of straw. She can come and go as she pleases, stable door left open


On average how many bags/bales of bedding do you use a week?
One and a half


How do you store your bedding?
My Dad's factory/warehouse, on the palet

How do you dispose of your bedding?
Err...Muckheap. That's where it stays :o

Nope, but if he did he'd be on Sundown gold only, there's literally no dust :D


If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be?
Would stay put, he's on rubber matting but I wish it was a bit more like straw in the sense that it could sort of matt together and stay put.

If there was one thing you could change about the bedding you use, what would this be?
The price, £9.15 a bale is excessive!! But the cheaper bales (between £7 and £9 a bale) dont even last 1/2 as long as the bales I use so I would use double the amount and it would cost me an awful lot more

Have one horse that starts coughing every Jan till spring
Hate shavings cost too much, hard to dispose of, and don't give a warm bed like straw. My boxwalker has started to setttle down and not walk so much on straw,but on the shavings, clear circle, shavings and droppings up against stable wall all mixed in so throwing most of bedding away,he now does his droppings in one place and only one barrow of muck a day. bliss
