Hi, I have had my cob for a few months now...putting up with his VERY hairy feathers. As lovely and beautiful as they are I decided he was too itchy and banging his feet too much (after numerous 'cures', de-lice etc etc) i decided I had to get them clipped off just to see exactly what was going on under there. Well to my horror on both back heals he has pretty much identical scabs.they were old and when my clippers knocked one off showed what I would describe as a slice. About 3cm long and about 2mm deep. it wasn't bleeding and looked clean but was moist and not dried out..(due to the masses of hair??) anyways I am presuming they are cracked heals. They are quite nasty wounds..he isn't lame but god knows how long he has had them..healing then re-opening...he had a pretty rough time before I bought him. shall I cream them? Bandage them? Leave them to air to dry out? Thanks

When they have very heavy feathers sometimes they never truely dry out.The skin is moist, an ideal breeding ground for infection, now the feather is gone I would wash and dry the heels and keep as clean and dry as you can.
I would then leave them open ,if they dry out well they should heal fairly quickly.

i agree with drying out but they are in a bad bit so to speak!! smother with vaseline to soften the skin around it for a while then let dry!!!

Thankyou for the replies...he is sudo creamed up and happy for me to apply the cream now. Wasn't so keen before!! ;) haven't regretted clipping the feathers off...I would of never seen what was hidden underneath!!
