I am looking to purchase a horse from the coventry warwickshire area but am very wary about whether I have been told the truth or not. I totally believed this person was genuine until someone said they know their is a dealer in that area who say's she's a private seller but is really trade. Unfortunately they don't know her name. I don't want to say what this women is called because I feel it's unfair as I feel she is genuine. If anyone has been caught out before by someone from this area claiming to be a private seller then can you please PM me unless you want to warn others

Get a friend of yours to make a spoof phone call asking a load of questions etc. Not all dealers are bad. I have brought my last three from professional dealers and have not had any problems. You could always phone trading standards as well if you feel that unsure. However there are plenty of good horses out there for sale, so if you feel that uncomfortable try somebody else. Good luck

Trust no one - whether dealer or private you need to have your wits about you. A private person is probably worse in some senses, as no recourse at all, whereas you do (in theory) get a bit with a dealer.

It is not only that people are dishonest some people are just ignorant.

My advice is not to believe anything that they tell you when it comes to buying a horse.

Ride the horse out several times (especially on busy roads), groom it tack it up and un-tack it, load it in a trailer etc and turn up early or even without warning. And however cheap it is have it vetted by the best vet you can find because keeping a sick or injured horse is expensive on the pocket and the mind!

Good luck!

Agree that not all dealers are bad- i bought a horse from one, didn't suit - she took him back after several months and swapped him for another who I still have many years later. I wouldn't have got this from a private seller.

Be cautious whoever you buy your horse from - Good luck!

I've tacked up ridden on roads with allsorts passing by and loads of things were going on and she was amazing. I'm not saying she was completely doppy she had her wits about her but I felt very comfortable and really liked her. I checked her over, rugged her up turned her out etc. I think I'm just wary of everyone and she has several horses to sell but states she is a private seller.

If the advert is in ad trader or free ads then googling her mobile number won't work. However, you can ring them and ask them if she's had multiple adverts over the past year. I bought a horse from a woman I believed to be a private seller and she turned out to be a dealer. As she uses ad trader I got the info from them about her multiple adverts. The other thing to do is ask your local vet, I didn't ask my vet or get the horse vetted but if I had he would have told me straight away she was a dealer.

Trading standards won't be involved unless they are investigating criminal activity, so unless they already have a case on her posing as a private seller but actually being a dealer (which they are actually really hot on!) they won't have any record.

Good luck, although if she is a dealer and you can prove it you have more rights under the sale of goods act than if she's a private seller.
