Hey guys

This may sound trivial to some but I need to decide by tomorrow where my horse is going to be stabled. I currently keep him and his companion at home but am moving him to livery for the winter for the facilities.

Both yards only have 1 space left so I need to decide tomorrow and call them.

Both are grass DIY, include ad-lib hay in field, daily check, use of a stable (although il keep him out 24/7) and are 5 mins from my house. Both yards are child friendly in that if needs be I can take my 2 yr old son with me to feed and check.

Yard 1
£19 pw
She's ageed to give him his breakfast every morning - free
Large indoor school
Decent hacking
Only 3 other liveries - worried i'll be a bit lonely and it's always more fun with others around
On the plus the school will always be available and quiet

Yard 2
£30 pw
£2.50 to feed in field if I can't get up
Large outdoor school
No indoor school
Cracking hacking
Plenty other liveries so sociable and plenty hacking chums
School may be busy at times and need to clear it with others before I pull the jumps out

So if it had an indoor school yard 2 would win hands down as even though it's more expensive it's much smarter and more lively.

I've never been at a yard with an indoor school before and have always managed. I've always dreamt of one though.

As I've got a wee boy and my man works unpredictable hours in CID when I do get the chance to ride it would be rubbish if I couldn't cause of the lovely Scottish weather.

Arghh... I need some fresh thoughts on this as I just can't decide.

The cheapest, surely? Having heard all the stories about unpleasant livery yards wouldn't fewer be best?

I suppose in a way it is what you want to do with your horse. If you want to compete, and therefore school regularly then Yard A would be the one. If, on the other hand, you mostly want to go hacking then would the better hacking be worth the more money? For some people it would.

The first.
If you're moving for facilities you'll actually be able to use them at yard 1. At yard 2 they'll often be too busy.

I think if you move to yard 2 there will be less point in moving.

Yard 1 is cheaper as well..

Yard 1 hands down.

Actually I am going to have the last space on yard 1 it sounds cheaper than keeping them at home!! I'd have to pay 25 quid an hour for an indoor school :o

Guys thanks so much for ur swift replies! :)

Yard 1 is definitely the better deal by far financially and has the indoor school. Seems almost too good a deal to pass up.

However I've really been missing the fun of having other people around to chat to and share stories with while I've had him at home. The social side of it is a big deal for me as having a wee boy I don't go out at weekends so horses are a major part of my social life.

Suppose I could just cross my fingers and toes that the few liveries that are at yard 1 are friendly and are around at times.

When I went to view yard 2 last night it was so bright and clean and had a lovely relaxed friendly feel about it.

On the other hand with winter coming it would suck not being able to ride for days/weeks due to crap weather with no indoor school.

Think what I really need to do is go visit yard 1 again tomorrow morning before I make a final decision. It was dark and rainy when I went to view it the other night and it was just me and the yard owner and the place felt a bit sort of sad. When I went to yard 2 it was full of life and so clean and less mud.

Watch me do maths badly here!

OK so if both yards are 5 mins from your house, that must mean that they are max 10 mins from each other, right... (probably not but maths is not my strong point).

How about - keep horses at yard 1 (with those facilities, I'd be there now!) and then see about hacking to yard 2 if possible, and going there for competitions/lessons or whatever. You can then get chatting to all the horsey folk at yard 2, while chuckling as you ride in the empty indoor at yard 1, listening to the wind howling outside!

I go with plan Ken :D
