My mare who has just turned 5 was working beautifully and everyday there was huge progress. I had a couple of lessons which were going really great and my instructor advised I get her back checked (because she could see some tightness - Nothing major). I got the McTimoney out to look at her. Her Pelvis was out which he did exercises to correct and some misalignment in her spine which he manipulated. She worked well - better than ever - for 2 days and then reared in the school followed by bronching (totally out of girlies character). I rode again the next day and she was a little reluctant to come round but nothing drastic. I then lunged for 2 days and McTimoney came back to do follow up and more treatment. I gave her a week off after that due to her Sub-mandibular lymph node flaring up (vet tells me its common at her age). Okay - this is what it all boils down to....

Friday I rode for the first time in over a week, lunged for 15 mins first and got on, very good girl but then I asked for trot and she was trying her hardest to skip me off my correct diagonal (worse on the right rein) then when I asked for canter, ears back and bronched like a good en'! Totally out of character and was really stuffy. Next day, rode again, still stuffy and reluctant but no bronching- still skipping me off diagonal though. Yesterday - rode for 10 mins in walk and trot only but still no change.

What shall I do? Shall I get the vet? I am really close to Liphook Equine hospital - Do I go there? Any advice will be gratefull received.

Massive bag of jelly babies for anyone who has made it here :) very much appreciated x

Second the vet suggestion. Would be very cautious about any back treatment that hasn't been specifically suggested by a vet TBH.

Does sound like she could be uncomfortable in her back - I would be inclined to get the vet out, or at the very least have the conversation with them on the phone

I would get her saddle checked. She may well have changed shape. Once the saddle has been checked and you know that whichever saddle she is wearing is a good fit and the behaviour continues then I would ask the vet to have a look.

I'd get the vet out.
My mare changed behaviour and became spooky a few months ago. As the vet (who is a back specialist) had seen her just a couple of weeks before I got the saddler out. She decided that the saddle needed adjustment. I rode a few times and didn't have any real problems. Then we were off work because of the weather. The mare threw me off twice in 5 short hacks, so I got the vet out again. He diagnosed muscular problems and she has to have at least 3 months off work and quite a lot of treatment. I wish I'd asked the vet to have another look at the start. That would have saved us both a considerable amount of pain and me a LOT of money.

I'd get the vet out, if they can't see anything wrong, then teeth and saddle. If they've just had stuff done to their back they can often change shape slightly, good luck and don't forget to update! Xx

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments, I have spoken to the vet and booking them to come out over the weekend to see her trotted up and do some flexion tests. Have provisionally booked a saddler/physio lady to come out on 1st May to check pony's saddles fitting okay. Fingers crossed for my girlie, I just want to go home and ride her but I know I cant. I have offered to hack out another horse on the yard to keep me sane. Poor India x
