...electric fence destroyer!!! Yesterday he broke the fence(nice solid post and rail with electric on the top) trying to reach to the grass on other side. Today i had a call from the YO what Teddy is out and walked through the electric fence:( Any ideas what to do? We have post and rail all around,but the gate is electric rope, and its just not enough for him:( He is so thick skinned. Help please,how to stop him walking through and trashing the fences?:(
 
Not our place,not our field,dont think farmer will allow it(i thought about it). And then i think if he'll lean on that,he'll take it down with the posts gates attached to. Happened before:(
 
Unfortunately I know its not the most helpful advice but can you put him in a field that isn't surrounded by electric fence?

The only other thing I can think of is to put multiple lengths of electric fence around his field.

I know its not most useful but thats the only thing thats can be suggested really to keep him out. The other option is keep him in? (which i know is not good) or we use to keep the stallion in the school!

Thanks. No,it will be even worse to have a field without electric,he will just walk through it. Cant keep him in,it will be no stable when we come back:( Do all electric fences so weak? Is it possible to get stronger one? I mean stronger electric current?
 
I know it will sound cruel but have you made sure he has had a good belt off of the fence??
I had a pony that used to go through elec fence when wearing a rug so one day I took him up to the fence and got him to put his nose on it, he got quite a good kick off it and went off like a rocket but never went through a fence again!!
 
Sounds like you need some better grazing and a stronger electric current.

Can you have the electric fencing hooked up to the mains?
 
Check the energiser is working correctly & sending out sufficient charge. Many electric fence set ups don't have a sufficiently long earthing stake so the charge through the fence is weak. Then put him out without a rug so if he does try to walk through the electric fence he should get a really good belt. If he gets a shock a couple of times hopefully he'll gain some respect for the fence & stay away.

Yes there is a variety of strength in electric fences it sometimes tells you on the box what voltage it is. I not to sure on the strongest strength etc so hopefully someone else can help you with the strongest. But have a look on the box to see how strong it is. Some can just be turned up. Otherwise might need a new box.

Have you checked it's at full power? I always thought ours was weak, but was still on (I'm good at falling on leccy fences so it was definitely on!), ponies completely ignored it... we then cut back all the leaning grass on it at the other end of the yard and it now shocks properly and ponies don't go through it anymore. (Only the shetland will lean on it getting zapped to stuff his face!!!)

We double strand fences that ponies run through and two heights also seems to deter them.

Only the ponies that are the issue at ours, stallion and big horses no problem!

Is he wearing a rug? If so, I find it dulls the shock - sometimes even of a mains connected line, to a tolerable level so that mine pay a lot less attention to it. If he's rugged, trying unrugging if you can.

If he's not rugged and/or just doesn't give a hoot about the shock he's getting as he bids his escape to fresh pastures, I can only suggest you either buy a extra strong energiser yourself and connect this to the line around your gelding's field along with a decent battery or move him to somewhere that had mains electric fencing. It cannot be safe for him to keep escaping his field so you really need to do one or the other suggestion. :)

I second this, I know it seems wrong but if it is the only way he will learn it is worth doing the once. Does he have a rug on? It may be worth leaving that off for a while if you can so he feels the electric when going through it.
 
Thanks. Someone suggested to me sewing the length of electric tape inside his rug and onto the clips,so when he touches the fence he will feel it. Will this work? Has anyone done this before? He lives out 24/7,and i cant leave him without rug with this weather,it always rains!:(
 
We're in May now, he won't melt if he gets wet and it's not that cold. Take his rug off and let him get a belt. He won't get pneumonia!

(I had to de-rug my TB in the SNOW so that he got zapped and learned to respect leccy fencing. Did the job though!)

Yes the tape on the rug does work. thread a length of electric tape behind the chest of rug and tie ends together. When he leans on fence he will get a belt, where his rug would have protected him from it before. Some horses do ignore a low current though, mains fencer is the only one strong enough for some. If the battery is flat they know it. We have mains but one youngster always knows if it's not on, whereas the mares wouldn't go near it if it was off for days. Years of experience I guess. That's another thought, if he's not had experience of it in the past it may take a few good whacks off it for him to respect it.
 
The tape inside the rug will work, and wrap some around his head collar and in his mane, then he will get the mother of all shocks:D:D:D
 
Ok,hard times needs hard decidions.What is the strongest electric current horse can have without having any damage? Hope you understand what I mean.Bugger went out of the field again while I was at work!
 
Check the fence has enough charge using a tester ( YO should have one ) need to be reading about 7 or higher.
Remove his rug if he as one and clip his chest or thoroughly wet it horses like this need a decent shock to teach them .
 
it seems a bit odd to me to have a full fence and rail paddock with an elec fence gate. We don't have a proper gate but we have a pair of slip rails that do the job nicely :).

Otherwise yes, see if you can get some wide (40mm) tape. You don't need to sew it in you can just loop it round at the front of the rug. Unless of course he is only using one shoulder.

no energiser is going to put out a current that can cause damage!
 
I've got some conductor gel which works a charm if you smear it on their chests. If you PM me your address, I'll post you some.
 
Mine would escape if hungry but agree give him a zap or clip if thick coat. But hay if they are good doers etc to keep them busy

This is what I thought, if he is trashing through with electric fencing then it is not powerful enough. my horse would jump the electric fencing sometimes trashing it until I upped the power, now he stays clears.
 
I know a lot of people will disagree with this suggestion, but add a plain wire strand at the top, use the tall posts, and use as strong a power source as you can, that is mains if you can.
 
try and find an energiser rated at 1.6Joules - that is the heftiest energiser that will run off a battery and you will have to charge the battery regularly. I'd also do double fencing - so that as he leans on the fence he's likely to get a double shock, one from first fence and one from second fence as he walks through. Also make sure the fence isn't earthing anywhere it shouldn't be - if its running along the top of the fence and is wet it could be shorting a bit.
My pony got a shock through his rug the other day - fully rugged (including neck rug) leaning over the fence, and turned the fence on whilst he was leaning over as that was when it was stretched, heard a crack which made him jump probably as much as the electric. Really gained some respect.
 
I know you dont want to but please, just take the ruddy rug OFF! Even if it just for one day. he will get a zap and never go near it again.

i did this with mine - it did work and we've not had any problems since - i turned her out for the night with her winter woolies on and let her zap herself as much as she liked - in the morning i couldnt get her in because she wouldnt go near the fence but we soon got over that and as they say . . . the rest is history ;)
 
Thanks for all your suggestions. We seem to be on the end of the line and somewhere before us there must be some damage as the electric fence has no kick at all.
So for now his rug is off and they are in the other field (with too much grass:() and we will try and sort the fencing over the weekend.
(Any one got a spare 200m armor plated cable, trenching machine and Electrician):rolleyes:
