I have arranged for a horse to come on loan with a view to buy starting from this weekend - very excited!! But I am really confused about arranging her insurance whilst she is on loan :S

I contacted NFU about getting her insured and they said I would need a vet report from the last 12 months. The horse in question hasn't been vetted for three years. I would rather not get her vetted yet, as it is a large finacial commitment for a horse I may only have on loan for a couple of months (if I did buy her I would her her vetted first)

Is there anyway I can get round having to have her vetted so early on? Do any insurance companies not require recent vet reports? Or could she stay on the policy her owner already has and come on loan to a diffrent yard?

Maybe I just have to bite the bullet and have her vetted now.

Really hope you can help, very confused! thanks x

I think it depends on the amount your insuring the horse for too which is possibly why they want a vets report - Cant the current owner just continue the insurance they have (inform them the horse is on loan etc) maybe you pay them for the months/weeks you have the horse, and if you decide to buy then you get your own policy??

ETA - When i say pay them i men pay the insurance premium monthly payments

I have my loan horse insured with Petplan Equine. The owner wanted him insured for £5000 and so I would have needed to have a vet cert which I was not prepared to pay for. As she didn't want to get one done either, I insured him for £4950 and did not need a vet cert.

I also made sure the insurance co know that I am not his owner, although they did not take his owner's name and address.

Surely, anyone thinking of loaning their horse out would have made sure the insurance was in place beforehand; I know I have always sorted out the insurance for the mare's I have sent on loan and then the loaners reimburse me the premium while they have them. I wouldn't dream of allowing the loaner to insure in their name unless they had bought the horse.

When I had my first horse on loan for a year the owner carried on with his existing policy in her name with my yard address, and I set up a direct debit to reimburse her every month.

That way she was happy that the horse had the cover she required with a company of her choice, but I was paying for it as he was on loan to me.

I think it was with SEIB but I think most insurance companies would be ok with that arrangement as long as you inform them.

KBIS insured our loan horse, who we never had vetted, with no problems at all. Personally, I haven't been impressed with the NFU, but lots of people seem to rate them very highly. I don't blame you for not wanting to shell out on a vetting yet, so I'd shop around :D

How exiting! Hope it all works out, love to see some pictures of her :D

I took on a horse last summer on loan (not view to buy). I just rang my local NFU office, told them he was worth £4,500, age, height etc, and they insured him just like that, no questions. I don't know if that was because value wise he was below some preset level or not. I wouldn't have been surprised if they'd asked me to have him vetted if I had then rung up to say I was now buying him however. I was paying approx £40/month.

I have my loan horse insured with Amtrust Equine. He was 13 when I got him and had never been insured before in his life. They didn't ask for a vet's report or a vetting. I had to provide them with a photocopy of his passport and his owner's contact details but that is all.

Try Amtrust. They are expensive but good :)

When I had my loan, the owner had already paid the annual premium (E&L :() so we left it at that - just changed the address and notified them that she was now on loan to me (over the phone), and then when it came up for renewal I took over a monthly direct debit. Luckily it was easy to cancel when she went home and they have taken it back on. Not that I would have E&L out of choice now. I will be getting SEIB for Hugo, I think.
