Hi, was hoping some of you may be able to help or give your views/advice on my beast! I have had him since a 4/5 year old and hogged him not expecting him to make 16.1 and be quite so chunky. I am not sure if I should keep him hogged and prey for some maxi cob classes to come our way OR do I grow his mane and keep entering workers (only local stuff really). I am just too confused now as some people are saying he looks more hunter then cob and the other way around. What do I do?!?!?!? I have posted a few too many pics and I had a play with one to see how he could look plaited up?

Thank you!!!!! B & D X

He is a nice looking horse with a lovely expression! I would go maxi cob, but there are far fewer classes for them. To be quite honest, you could affiliate him as a maxi and do quite well, but I would probably not affiliate him as a hunter. It depends on what level you would like to show and how many classes you want to be able to do. If you want to do mainly local, you are better off leaving the mane on and you can still do classes of "cob type". If you want to do county type shows (some of which have maxi classes) then hog him. You would still be able to do hunter type classes at local shows if he is hogged.

Fine for local showing, however the hunter classes locally are not usually split weight wise. For a HW hunter, he would need to be much taller - nearer the 17.2 or above mark not to look out of place in an affiliated class. His conformation is also not quality enough for a hunter - he is (to me at least) a good example of a cob, no matter what height he is. I really think it depends on the level of showing that Drummer fancies doing - and not having to plait in the mornings is also a massive bonus!

Agree with FMM, he's deffo a cob, and not a hunter!
How tall are you btw?? is there no way he'd measure for normal cob classes?
He looks like a lovely chap tho, good luck with it all

Grow it all back and do traditional cob classes. No height limit!
He looks more cob like then hunter to me, I'd do maxi classes if you can find any and do local working hunters as well.

O my god - he is so GOD DAM SMEXY!

Hogged all the way!

I would say he does look more of a hunter than a cob, however I find hunter types like your horse look better with a hogged mane

But he is so lovely - has such a nice face and so good looking!

Can I have him please! I could part Exchange

KEEP HIM HOGGED!
He is absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!
Not inot showing much so cant help!
but please please please keep him hogged! it would be a crime not to!
Ive got a hogged boy, (i love hogged cobs!) and i tried growing it one year, looked awful and very bogbrush like! lol! Would definately not recommend it!

I'd agree totally with FMM. He is a cob type and would do well in affiliated maxi classes, but you will be very limited with the number of classes you can do, although at local level many cob classes don't have a height limit. Personally I think he'd be on the heavy side for hunter classes at local level (he has definate cob legs) but there'd be more classes for you if he was plaited.

Irishcobs - if he was coloured he'd be able to do coloured classes as a traditional or hogged cob (or plated for that matter), but traditional classes for non coloured horses don't exist (widely) at present.

OOh - meant to say that the British Show Horse Association (the old British Show Hack and Cob Association) have introduced "day" tickets. This means that for £15 for rider and £15 for a horse you can do an affiliated class without having to pay full membership (which is around £100 for hrose and rider). At least you can try the maxi classes and see how you get oon before forking out a fortune. If he goes well, then I am sure you will have fun and do very well with the maxi classes.

Hi babe,

As always uncle drum is one sexy fella. Ive just grabbed my showing book off the shelf and he is deffo more of a cob than hunter type. Ive had a look at examples of good hunters and they are much finer through the legs tham Drum.

The book tells me about how much inches of bone a light, medium and H/ws should have. If you want to borrow it babe, give me buzz.

And I still have the book you lent me as well hun.

Lova ya and uncle drum always...Oh Olliwoo said he was very impressed with you all on his visit sunday and can he come again next sunday?

Emma

He he thank you everyone for your lovely comments. After a glass (2 bottles) of wine it is bringing a tear to my eye! Not bad for my bargain shire type that goes like a motor bike - we showed them!!
In my eyes he is more of a cob type and certainly has the head of a lady and backside of a cook - if thats how it goes!?!
I just wanted to get others feelers as him as a hunter as I have never hought of him as this 'type'. As gorgeouse as he is in my eyes I cannot compare him to the hunters we see representing their type but cobs yes.

Also the late nights/early mornings getting him white are bad enough I dont fancy adding plaiting to the list lol!

Thank you for all the lovely comments, ever so tempted to trade him in some days (was once offered an audi tt-mad man).

He will never leave my side he is far too good at giving sloppy snogs!

Many thanks

B and D x

Ooooh forgot to add he is/was a blue and white but his markings have pretty much gone out of the window sadly. This pic was a month or 2 after I bought him. Where you can slightly see his colouring. (one in the middle)

ow Drumstick. what a stud muffin you are. i talked to him last night and stared at him and just couldnt for the life of my imagine him with hair! i think he'd look a bit poofy? XX

P.s Em yay bring Olliwally again at the weekend!

I have done a few local coloured classes with him but I always feel so out of place and like we dont belong there sniff sniff. Saying that I remember seeing a big blue and white at Windsor in a coloured class a few years ago whose blue had faded. He just seems to be a little bit of a few things and fits into no solid group bless. Maxi's here we come!!

He did look cute with hair when he was scrawney but now hmm! Would be nice to have something to grab hold of when he is trying to kill me over jumps!

Awwww thanks V!!!

You can register with CHAPS and BSPA and they won't mind at all if you are ex blue and white. Local shows will probably not deal with it well as the judges are probably not going to be "coloured" judges and not sure how to deal with a faded colour.

Definately a Maxi cob and he is lovely.
Dont quite think he has the right limbs for a hunter and not enough size for a HW.
Would go and do some working hunters though.

i am loving this horse needs to carry more weight maybe for cobs but has the bone for sure maxi cobs classes hard to find at the mo but will become more popular im sure , if i were you i would keep on with workers and hunters and cobs see which he does best in and leave him hogged this season make your mind up at end of season and is you go with hunters ect grow back over winter good luck i am sure he will excell at anything you try with him
