Apologies, posted this in stable forum but only had 1 response which was good and thank you to that person, but ..........

Can any one help me as to where I start teaching the fat lump to take a harness and potentially drive him.

I need to do something different with him to spice u his life. We have tried little long reining, and he gets the general jist although standing still is a bit of an issue !! Can anyone give advise, exercises to do, stages to go through ?

I would advise that you get him used to the blinkers. That is just about the biggest hurdle for some horses. Longrein him in the school with them on first and then when you are safe you can go on the roads/fields. Do not put them on in the stable or in an enclosed space.

As for standing still, once you have him going in blinkers, longrein him up to the fence in the school and do not let him turn, he must stand still.

Once he is longreining well you can introduce some lateral work. He will need to learn to turn very tightly, crossing his legs over, once he is between shafts. You an practise this with lightweight poles down his sides so that he gets the feel of the shafts on his side and learns how to turn with them.

Do you know anyone that drives or has broken a horse to drive before? If anything goes wrong he may never let you do anything with him again. I'm not trying to scare you but I've seen first hand what happens when things go wrong because the owners didn't know what they were doing.

Do you have a harness for him? Some horses don't like the breeching, especially when weight is put on it, which will happen when driving.
He needs to be longreining 100% before you put blinkers on him as he can not see anywhere but forwards so relays on you to tell him its safe. Putting the blinkers on must be done in a secure but open space like a school because if he panics and throws his head about he could really hurt you and himself in a stable.

I can PM you stage by stage later if you want but until he is longreining well and excepts the blinkers then you can't start anything else.
