My just turned 3, welsh sec c has been recently diagnosed OCD at leahurst.
I have been told he will have 60% chance of ever being sound. He is going to have keyhole surgery to see how severe his condition is and to then see where to go, whether it be flush out what every maybe there or steroid injections.
I have been told rehabilitation will be 6-9months of box rest and walking out. I would like to know has any body come out of the end with this condition? I want to know has it ever reoccured? Has it persisted to be a problem throughout the horse's life?
I am worried that in 6 month times when i start to work him he will just go lame again. I am insured for 12months from now with this and after that i am on my own. Please can anyone help?

what joint?

my welsh cob was diagnosed with OCD in both stifles aged 8. he had arthroscopy and a year off (8wks box rest, 6mths field rest) but is still slightly lame on it. he's now a light hack and is unlikely to ever do more than that.

it is in his stifle, they have scanned both but it is just his left one with the condition. After his sugery yesterday she has now told me cause the lesion is over 1cm he only has a 30-40% chance of ever being sound. What would your recomedations be? They have said 6months of box rest no turn out, he may not even ever be turned out which would send my pony crazy.

IMHO never being turned out is no life for a pony. it's up to you what you do. for the best chance of success you need to do the box rest but I did all that and still had a lame horse so in the same situation again I'd probably box rest for 6wks post surgery then turn away for 18mths and see what happened. I'm not advising you to go against your vet's advise though. You must do what's right for both of you.

I no it be no life for him at all, i am feeling guilty about the 6 months box rest as he is very spirited and on calmer supplements to try and relax him and thats just off 6 wks worth. Did you use or still use supplements? What supplements have you used? Did the vet give you an outcome, a percentage or anything? I don't want to part with him, if i could use him for hacking and him turned out it be enough. ust dont want to go through all this and me prolonging something thats just going to happen any way, and making him suffer being banged up.

I put him on Newmarket joint supplement which the insurance company paid for. Now he is on Suppleaze Gold. Not sure they make much difference though. He was v good on box rest but awful on field rest and spent his time charging about like a lunatic. Not good :(
