Hi It has been raining non stop here and my two yearlings have come out in a rash they are both covered in bumps the size of small fly bites all over their neck and shoulders - not under their manes though
they dont have rugs on because I havent been able to pick them up from my mums house plus its been warm
I thought it could be some sort of rain scald but they dont have it in the usual places like top of bum etc
anyone have any ideas or seen this before???
ps. ive got their rugs coming tomorrow:confused:

im not too sure but i would hazard a guess that it would do if the weather has been horrid.

is it like scabby bumps?

Sorry for the un-technical description

Text book rainscald hun. A horse can develop it anywhere that the skin is compromised from being perpetually wet. An owner may find - strangely - that her horse seems to have it down eg one side of the neck and the reason will be the horse likes to stand with one side against a hedge and the other side always gets wet! Or he develops it in one spot on his rump and the answer is he always stands under the overhang of the field shelter and the rainwater drips off onto his bum! You get the idea. It's probably been brewing for some time on your youngsters but it's not really noticeable until it gets to the stage where the hair roots are damaged and little clumps of hair start coming out and the skin feels rough and bumpy, as you describe. I'm guessing you know how to deal with rainscald but I'd recommend putting just a no-filling rain sheet on your youngsters in heavy rain, at least until this bout has cleared up. Bad attacks of rainscald can be difficult to clear up and can be so deep that the hair follicles are damaged and the horse will end up with white patches on the rain scald areas. Not sure what you will be doing with your youngsters but you won't want tell tale white patches all over them x

Thanks,
I recon it is rain scald my welshie had is when I got him as a foal from being out on the hills with mum, we have always found that baby oil works best I have seen some awful cases and nothing has worked exept that,
the sun is out today though yay!!!

We get rainscald year round here in New Zealand - the best thing to treat it with is Nizeral - a human anti dandruff shampoo. Works brilliently.

Dilute in warm water and lather up well over and around the affected area. If you use a face cloth it will gently remove some of the scabs, you don't need to rinse it off. Please don't try to pick scabs off - they are not normal scabs but lymph that has oozed out of the skin and stuck to surrounding hairs, when you forcibly pull them off you also pull the hair out by it's roots, breaking the skin and allowing bacteria in. Let the shampoo break it down.

Feeding a supplement of Copper & Zinc will help treat and prevent rainscald, mudfever & greasy heel from the inside. Both minerals are needed for good skin health.
