I posted a while ago on here about beau digging but no1 responded

Cala gave me a few tips, and Iv tried them, but to no avail!

Beau keeps digging up a potted plant (a large one!) infront of our porch in our front garden. There is an identical one (pot, plant everything) on the other side of the porch, but he just has this one that he focusses on!

He knocks it over, pulls the dirt out then walks off. Like not trying to hide something or find something, just being a naughty little ****

Iv tried putting chilli in the water on the plant, iv caught him and told him off for doing it, and iv given him plenty of other things to do (like kongs, toys, bordom breakers etc) all to no avail!

Please, has anyone got any suggestions or help for me?!

Would changing the pot completely help do you think? like new pot and new compost and new plant etc (as he has killed the current plant!)

Just cause mum is really getting to the end of her tether with it, and she is so good about other naughty little bits he does.......

Please help me!

Have you tried swapping the plants around? See if it is the location of the plant or something about that specific plant. Maybe try putting something else in its place for a couple of days see what happens.

Don't know if it will help but will certainly narrow things down a bit!

mustard powder... hmmm...... would that be similar to like putting chilli on it?! as I did that, and it worked for a little while but i think that, because of the rain recently, alot of it has just washed away! (obviously, just to make life easier!!!!!)

Im starting to think barb wire lining the pots is the way forward MWAHAHAHA! (jokes!)

I get why my mum is mad, as I am that he does it! and as you say, its like spates of digging, not constant!

Dont get my dog, he is such an ass sometimes!

Cant move pot around as the one that he doesnt dig up, both plants were clematisis (sp?!) and the one that is still alive has therefore grown up and around the porch (which they were both supposed to do!!!)

Because I cant move the other plant, I was wondering if maybe buying the new one might make a difference (incase its just that pot or something.......) or do you think just moving that pot all together and seeing if its the location would be a better idea?

I know nothing about plants!!!
Can you put up a screen or something at the times when he would have access to it?

I put mustard and chilli powder on the cable ties that I use to shore up Bella's run (she broke the wire away from the main frame by bouncing on it) and she still chews them off, grrr!
I think it is like a sport for them sometimes....

thats the thing, as i say its not like he is doing it with an intention of doing something after digging it! its jsut the digging!

Grr infuriating puppy!

Ok I may try moving the pot, and see if that helps at all. If he starts digging up other stuff then will re assess....

How old is he? How much exercise does he get and does he get left on his own a lot?
Some young dogs just dig for the hell of it and will grow out of it. I'd leave the plant pot next time he destroys it, obviously take plant and stick somewhere else for the moment. And see what he does - he may just be enjoying doing it as it is all put back again ready for him to start all over so he's essentially getting a reward for doing it and it smells of you so even better! See what his attention is diverted to next or try different toys like the kong or get a sand pit/dig hole in garden somewhere and fill with sand so you don't have heaps of mud trailed into your house - stick a large tarpaulin under sand pit if you go for that option so it is easier to put it all back in when flung out and bury treats in it - so he learns to dig where you want him to until he either gets bored of digging or grows out of it!! Mine used to be terrible diggers too, but as soon as they were old enough we took them on a good hour or more off the lead exercise a day and they were too tired to dig!

no he gets easily an hour a day off the lead! (he has just turned one!)

Prob with leaving it, is its RIGHT infront of the front door (obv, my dog doesnt do anything that could possibly be easy to sort!)

He does get a kong when I am working, and I have tried to provide him with one to amuse himself, but he is not particularly food orientated and will do it for so long, then goes and amuses himself! grr stupid border collie!

When he is supervised he is so well behaved (9/10!) but if left to his own devices in particular areas of the house (or garden) its like all behaviour goes POOF and he turns into neurotic naughty little collie!

Might try the sandpit idea to mum to see what she thinks of having that!

Sorry but nothing else to offer other than making sure he can't get to that area where the plant is )or move the plant completely) He has gotten into a bad old habit.

dang it!
stupid bad habbited dog!

However he is currently curled up on my bed asleep looking like a little angel (obv! he has had his naughty blast this morning!)

Goya, wanna swap Skye for a happy yet naughty border?!

hehe

Well if you find out how to stop him please tell me! Evie has emptied most of my plant pots, and spends all her time digging in the garden. Particularly pleasant when it as wet as it has been recently, she comes in looking like a hippo. i have tried spray repellents etc but nothing works. My one flower bed has chicken wire round it to keep it safe.

Ets, She has a lot more than an hour off lead exercise a day, plus road work, she just has boundless energy.

nope we have tried the repellent spray, worked for about 20 minutes (then it rained!)

Iv now moved the plant pot, not miles away, but down the side of the house about 3m, so hopefully this will help me see if its the pot or the location! (she prays!)

and we shall go from there, thank you will keep you updated, and may be back for more advice!

and MM, yup Iv got another hippo!

Don't they just test us with their little ways!!!
I asked Skye but she said she's settling here now, thanks and doesn't fancy another home change just yet. lol.
If you need a home for beau????????? I've always got room. (don't tell the OH)

Lol, well he would definetly help Skye come out of her shell as he never gives dogs another choice its always: play with me, or il nag you until you play with me!

he just loves other dogs!!
