Our new horse has now arrived

Having never previously owned a horse in the UK I am suddenly scared I am missing something obvious in terms of paper work - I need to transfer ownership in regards to his passport, I assume - but is there anything else?

The horse is registered BSJA - do I need to register change of ownership with them immediately as well? (I probably won't affiliate for a couple of months)

Please tell me if I am missing something obvious - the excitement of Ollie arriving has gone to my head!

You still need to post pic on HHO! I can't think of anything else re buying the horse, did you get a receipt? Not sure about the BSJA affiliation, never bought a pre affiliated horsey.

Yes you need to change the ownership in his passport but make sure you photo copy all the important pages and then send it recorded delivery. I wouldn't worry about the bsja reg until you want to start competing him.

We defintely want photos!

Get him insured PDQ as you will have a couple of weeks initially when you will be excluded for certain things. Go with Petplan or NFU. (Don't whatever you do throw any money at E&L - plenty of horror stories).

Definitely worth going with the higher level of cover for vets fees.

Thank you people - your help is so much appreciated as always. There will be photos soon - he is VERY cute! My sister who I am owning him with has managed to get the insurance sorted as well...

Now I just need a saddle or two, a bridle, boots, saddle cloths, rugs, grooming kit, first aid kit etc aaaaaarggh

I have managed to buy a head collar and a lead rope though...

With BSJA most people don't change ownership details till end of year renewal - it saves you paying more money to the BSJA though obviously you will need to register yourself
