Ok so I have checked his temperature and wormed him so that's all ok. His stools are ok, one or two a day would be more wet looking but never proper diarrhoea. But he farts and brown water runs out of him and everyday I go up to the yard his backend is covered. Nothing in his feed has changed and his haylage has been from the same place last year and it's always good and dry. I have been giving him protexin gut balancer for a week now but without any change. Also there's been no change in his temperament he seems absolutely fine.

Everything I have tried so far has been on vets advice (wormed him earlier than due, probiotic I've tried and the temperature) I tried to call in again earlier but no vets were free to talk. So I wanted to get people's experiences until I get back to the vets

The protexin can take at least a few weeks to kick in properly, it may just be that the grass is richer and has upset the balance a bit we have had rain and sun of late

Sometimes they can have an infection in the gut which can cause this type of diarohea so your vet will probably rule this out first with a stool sample

My mare suddenly started doing this and seemed a bit uncomfortable too, rather windy. I kept her bottom, tail and legs clean and dry but it went on for a couple of weeks so I started looking at non-medical ways of stopping it. I found a dollop of sugar beet and some dry bran did the trick nicely and once it was gone it didn't return. I think some thing was irritating the gut somewhere and itch led to scratch which led to itch. Once the cycle was broken all was good again and that was the end of it.

Anything affecting the digestive system affects the general health of the horse. The whole tract is populated with bacteria and other microbes, particularly the hindgut. Upsetting the balance is what causes loose droppings. Furthermore, horses tend to have looser droppings on lush grass because it is rapidly changing and has a much higher water and lower fibre content than mature grass does.

Loose droppings can be caused by not enough fibre in the diet too!

Have you tried the Protexin quick fix paste? My mare sometimes gets the watery backside, I usually use one tube of quick fix paste on the larger dose and the double the measures of the gut balancer for a few days and she soon settles back down.

The vet has given me a course of anti biotics for him whilst a poo sample is being sent off to be checked. Fingers crossed we get it sorted poor boy must be uncomfortable with his sticky bottom 😔
