I have just got a gorgeous filly. I want her to live out for another year as I am a strong believer in horses being 'horses' whilst they are young. i have a horse on loan to keep her company in the field, but the loan agreement might not work out. So what should i do?
1) buy a 'Shetland' or similar as a companion
2) loan a horse I can ride whilst my filly is 'maturing'
3) buy a cob type 3.5/4 year old to bring on as a project over winter and sell in summer
I am fine for the summer months - so only a prob for the next 6mths.
Option 3 is my fave as i love bringing on allrounder youngsters - i.e. making them safe on the roads, enjoy a little cross country course and easy to handle, etc. but worried about the extra costs.
What would you do?????
any comments welcome?

P.S. really don't want to start stabling my filly and leaving her out on her own is not an option!!

Any reason for this? Remember if you get a horse as a companion for her, you may need another companion for when you go out riding if the filly is not happy with her own company......

She has never been left on her own and only just moving to a new yard (i.e. i bought her last week) I'd be worried about leaving her out alone. What do others think about keeping horses on their own? there are other horses on the yard but not always in sight.

Well if this is the case, then I'd opt for the shetland. Absolutely no point getting a riding horse as you won't be able to take it anywhere.

Shetland, there awesome, cute, dont take much room and u can o all sorts of thing with them, take them for alks on a lunge, take them out when u hack.

Blimey - yet again I concur Tia! Must be the Quarter Horse in me!

Missy is 19 mths old and she stayed out on her own, she did see other horses near hand not in the same field, she had to get used to being on her own as we didnt have another pony/horse at the time .

She now has tommy in with her but as we take him out of the field to work with him shes used to it .
I think its good for them to be on their own and with company . Either or
